Walking up the Metro station and at the first junction, saw what looked like a young kid being resuscitated by paramedics on the side of the road for a good few minutes. Hope he made it, but it didn't look good at all

Newcastle car fire drama

May 18 2009 By Katy Simpson

A HEART attack victim was pulled from his burning car by brave passers-by.

A 4x4 crashed into a Vauxhall Vectra and burst into flames on St James’s Boulevard in Newcastle yesterday afternoon, after the driver suffered a suspected heart attack and fell unconscious.

But as his Hyundai Santa Fe was devoured in the fire, people nearby leapt to his aid, and dragged the man from the Hyundai Santa Fe.

Another by-stander tried desperately to tackle the blaze using a fire extinguisher, and managed to put it out before the firefighters arrived.

A Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: “Four appliances from Gateshead Fire Station attended St James’s Boulevard in Newcastle to the alarm caused by persons believed to be trapped following a road traffic accident involving a 4x4 which then caught fire.

“The driver, an adult male, was unconscious, was unconscious and removed from the vehicle by members of the public.

“The fire was extinguished by a member of the public using a dry powder extinguisher prior to the arrival of the fire service.

“Crews assisted paramedics qwith first aid at the scene.

“The driver was then taken to hospital, via ambulance, having suffered a suspected heart attack.”

The man was last night recovering in Newcastle General Hospital, although police could not yet say how badly he was injured.

St James’s Boulevard was closed temporarily from the junction with Westmoreland Road following the incident at around 5.30pm.
