Guest toonlass
Why would an MP in Hertfordshire need a second home? I have also just noticed that an MP from Golders Green has claimed for a second home too. Wtf??

Wtf?? Mine's in zone 4 of london, and in the london borough of bromley. £15.5k on a second home. Might write to her and politely enquire.
James
Why would an MP in Hertfordshire need a second home? People are being really stupid when getting outraged about travel and second homes in my opinion. If you had to be at work on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9am-11pm, not to mention the additional paperwork that had to be done outside of those hours, what would you do? I am just surprised that they need a second home when they live so close. And they choose to be MP's and work those hours, no-one forces them to. You could easily live where I do and do that, and I know people in my block of flats that do. It would ony take about 50 minutes return travel on public transport, and yet my MP has claimed £15k for second home allowences.

All right then, lets not have a government, problem solved. Because MPs would not choose to become an MP if they were forced to get just 3 hours sleep each day. These second home allowances are provided so an MP can do his or her job properly. Yes, its bad if they are spending money on swimming pools or gardens, or living with their sister, but an MP from Hertfordshire deserves a second home. Like you can see younger people manage it before going on to take it easy later on in life, but MPs are people in their 50s and 60s often, and their bodies are going to be able to cope much less with that kind of routine. What are you blethering on about man? 3 hours sleep? They live in London boroughs and Hertfordshire. How are they commuting in your little world? By walking? They get a damn good salary, and then the expenses on top of that. They don't deserve a second home at all.

Variety of ages, and I don't believe they could even live that much closer (time-wise) in their second home. Say they lived a 15min walk away (highly unlikely imo) they'd be saving just 20mins a day. I don't believe this is worth £15k. I'll write to my MP though, see what she's got to say for herself. I've got no problem if it is necessary, I'm just struggling to understand how it could be in this particular instance.

Tbh, I'm not really referring to your Bromsgrove example, as that is silly, considering its probably the same distance from parliament as many second homes. But it is perfectly valid for there to be a second home for someone living outside of London.

They get a damn good salary, and then the expenses on top of that. They don't deserve a second home at all. OK, they live in Hertfordshire. Lets say Stevenage is their nearest train station. It takes on average 30 minutes to get to your nearest train station. The train journey is 30 minutes. It takes half an hour to get from Kings Cross to the nearest tube to Parliament, and it probably takes 15 minutes to get into the building. Plus there is another 30 minutes waiting at interchanges. So that is two hours from home to Parliament in one direction. You need to be there for 9am, so you need to get up at 6am at the latest. Journey home will be slightly longer due to reduced frequencies, so you could be home at 1:30 at the earliest. Bed by 2am, so four hours. You've also got to consider that by not having a second home, you are paying £5000 extra in travel each year.

Goes for the whole situation and every MP.
