Tooj
Hi All, Now I know we have the photos thread but this is more for someone like myself who would actually like to get into photography, especially now the summer is around and there are plenty of places to go. Basically I'm just wondering where to get started, as in what camera to start off with, I saw a Fujifilm FinePix S5800 Digital Camera for £99 in Currys the other day but I'm not sure if that is actually any good. But baring in mind I've never done this sort of thing before so I'm not looking for anything top of the range. Then after that, really does anyone know of any websites of any techniques/tips for beginners, I'm guessing people use Photoshop to edit pictures in particular lighting styles? Also what websites do people use to upload their albums? I know of FlickR but are there any better ones? Thanks in advance all. Just something I'm really interested in doing. I use a fujifinepix an old one to only 3.1MP 10x optical zoom and I love it, does the job, I would love a digi slr Nikon D500 or the like but way to much money. Gte the Fuji you will love it, get biggest memory card you can get and the highest miliampage batteries at least 2 sets. As for a website the best digicam site on the net,, steves digicams. http://www.steves-digicams.com/

James
I don't personally know my stuff, but my Dad is big on this, and is always telling me how a lot of good cameras and lenses in particular are undervalued by sellers on ebay (ie people who buy a camera but never use it) and he has sometimes made £50 just by buying a camera part and selling it on. So ebay might be a good place for you to start if you can seriously see yourself carrying a massive camera around anywhere to take some quality shots. Munkey
depends on how in-depth you mean when it comes to photography. do you want to know about aperture/ shutter speeds & what effects you can get with different combinations, composition, lighting etc? if so, i'd suggest doing a course at a local college or something. you can pick most stuff up from books, but having a professional teaching you makes a hell of a difference..i did a GCSE, Foundation, HND then degree in photography and have been messing around with it for a fair few years..i'm constantly learning new things but having the foundation of knowledge is grand to go on rather than go straight for a small digital camera, i'd say go for a cheap film SLR - Olympus OM10 (my first camera and fairly cheap) or Nikon FE or something like that- that way you get to work out what does what and it doesn't cost as much as buying a digital SLR. as James posted previously, have a gander on eBay - that's where i got all my camera stuff at the moment and saved a packet (Nikon D80 & 3 lenses & saved around £400 plus 2 film cameras for £20 a pop). if you need any help, give me a shout
pedro111
Ah yes Dave thats the offer I took up a while back, the one from Jessops. I couldnt remember. It really is a superb camera. 2 things though. 1. You will need to buy an SD card as you only get 32mb of memory with the camera. This is a small issue though cause you can get 6gig SD cards from ebay which is more than you'll ever need and easily for well under £10. I did. 2. You will need to get some good rechargable batteries. I got some Energizer ones and they last easily over 250 snaps between recharges so thats 500+ snaps between the 4 batteries. Skirge
I want a new one like, my little Fuji does the job but I would love an SLR, or even one of those 20x optical 9mp jobs would do, am limited to 3mp and 10x optical.

Is this done in photoshop because these HDR images some of you produce look amazing! Photomatix Pro does the job. if you're creating an HDR image from 1 RAW then you do the different exposures in Photoshop then put them into Photomatix to do the tweaking and tone mapping..then back into Photoshop to do the finishing touches. Haz
Dynamic photo HDR will do a job of a pseudo HDR from one print. I caqnt tell the difference between it and photomatix except thers no screwing around with Dynamic - but if you want all the faff, its there for you to use. HDR is dramatic but use it sparingly otherwise all your photos will look 'otherwordly'.
Munkey
aye, a well selected image, and HDR correctly applied, is a wonder. have a look at this one that i came across on Flickr - it's truely amazing: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ptws/3575773538/ a badly done HDR image is an affront to the eyes...people tend to go overboard on the application of it and it makes an image look horrific
