PCW1983
Hi all, i'm hoping someone can give me some advice. Im currently in the process of buying a 1999 Cooper Sportspack MPI, when i test drove the car i notice that when going hard and changing into 3rd gear the revs would fly up and there would be a loss of power, this also happened more noticably in 4th gear. To me a mechanical novice i presumed there might be a problem with the clutch however ive later thought that surely this would happen in all gears if that was the case. ? I called Green and Whites and he said the best thing to do would be to check the diagnostics. Im buying this car from a independent dealer who does not specialize in Mini's however he did say he will get it checked out and im also getting a 6 month warranty. Have any of you came across this type of problem before and if so what advice would you give. For the record i'm spending £5500 on this mini and its got to be my daily driver so i really cant afford to have a load of problems with it. Thanks in advance, Philip

NE6
Was there grey smoke coming out the exhaust when changing in the higher gears? if so it's the clutch.
Guest Stephen927
Sounds to me like the clutch is slipping.
Guest Stephen927
If you can get another test drive then this is what you can do to see if its the clutch slipping.. If the road ahead is clear, go to about 20 miles per hour then put the car into 5th gear, the whole point is to stress the clutch. If it staggers and strains then your clutch is fine, if it revs like your in neutral or the RPM needle spins towards red far too fast then its your clutch that is slipping mate. Hope that helps. EDIT: Re-read your first post, I'm not so sure its the clutch slipping now.. sorry mate, could try it anyways or suggest that as a problem see what the bloke says. Na you might be right mate coz it was way more noticable when I was giving the car some, when I slowed the pace down and drove normally it was hard to get it to happen.
