Tooj
Fuck knows. A few on here have them though. I'm assuming it's pretty similar to using the hard-drive to play media through the PS3. But without all of the hassle.
Dave
Not all that much hassle tbh. mkv2vobftw.
SEMTEX
Not all that much hassle tbh. mkv2vobftw. No matter what you say, its ALOT more hassle than just moving a file. I have a WDTV but am looking at moving up in the world to Plex (http://www.plexapp.com) on a Mac Mini. I have a massive grand plan which can't really be discussed here... If you want to buy mine, feel free.
Lenny
They are very handy if you have one that plays all of the file formats. I have a HDX1000 which is by definition apparently a Networked Media Tank, which you can attach a hard drive to, as well as playing media accross a network. There are also other services on it such being able to download directly to it using torrents/newsgroup files as well as being able to set it up as a server using various methods. You can also browse certain sites like youtube etc. Probably a bit overkill but it plays everything I throw at it. I previously used my XBOX to play stuff but this is a lot quieter and doesn't require any conversion on files (such as removing files from mkv containers) to play them. Only had mine a month or so but I'm very happy with it.

Tooj
So would people recommend me this? Especially as I obviously rip a lot of HD movies and would like the accessibility of watching them with ease.
SEMTEX
If you want a cheap, non-networked solution, then this is for you. It's a really good piece of kit.
Tooj
If you want a cheap, non-networked solution, then this is for you. It's a really good piece of kit. What would be the advantaged of a network situation? And will it do the job instead of using my PS3? Div-x, X-Vid Avi's, HD etc
SEMTEX
I used to use my xbox, but if you want to play any MKV files its alot easier to throw them at the WDTV. The advantage of a networked solution is streaming from a network hard drive (or a shared folder on your network). With this you'll have to store everything on an external HDD or a flash drive, which will involve going back and forth between your PC and the WDTV. And the WDTV will play anything you throw at it*. There are decently active forums here http://wdtvforum.com/main/. Oh, and if any of your files have DTS audio, it'll only pass the audio through, so that'd mean you'd need some form of Hi-Fi effort with dts support if you had any files of that nature. *it has played everything ive thrown at it! But im sure youre best looking at an official list
