Guest firetotheworks
Just read one of LiquidAKs comments and started thinking about film versions that are better than the book. I could only think of this: Shawshank Redemption. Can anyone name any others?
madras
none that i've read/watched.
Guest firetotheworks
Debatable, but: Jurassic Park. The Shining and Jaws were nearly as good as the books. Im struggling to think of any others.
Nobody
Lord of the Rings trilogy Not denying that the books are well written, but they did bore me to death. Loved the films though. Also rate the series Dexter higher than the books Darkly Dreaming Dexter/Dearly Devoted Dexter. I haven't read the rest of the series though.

Guest firetotheworks
What a successful thread! WE'RE THINKING! JEEEEESUS! It was more an insult to me really. Ive heard a few people say that Total Recall is better than the Philip K Dick novel its based on. I haven't read the book though.

I haven't read the book, but I imagine that is utter balls because: 1. Phil. K Dick was a genius, and 2. Total Recall had Arnold Schwarzenneger in it. Keefaz
I'd say maybe High Fidelity. But, really, there's elements in the book I'd like in the film and vice versa.

Jill
Chrichton's Jurassic Park, pisses all over the film. This. Same for the sequel - the film was utter garbage and I'd loved the book, it was one of the first "grownup" books I read and couldn't believe the film was so bad. Really struggling to think of any to answer the OP - partly because I've only either read the book or seen the film and not done both, in a lot of cases. Aye, tbh, I normally avoid watching the film if I've enjoyed the book because I know 9 times out of 10 the film will not only be shit, but will also destroy my appreciation of the book. Disagree with the one about Jurassic Park, it was probably because I was at the perfect age but the visuals in Jurassic Park did it for me. No doubt on the Lost World though. Book: Great. Film: Tripe.

madras
the martian chronicles. the book is very scattered and loads of short stories where as the screen adapton pulls the best together into a more sequential story.

I feel the same way about Trainspotting but I suspect it's because I saw Trainspotting first.
Mowen
Shawshank was my first and only thought on seeing this thread. Still a very good novella mind.

Keefaz
Most silent films. Eh? I can't imagine many silent movies are better than the novels they were based on considering they have almost no dialogue, and everyone looks like this: http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/8557/bobbyvernong.jpg
macphisto
The Godfather? Best film there has ever been for me, though the Book is very good and compliments the film very well, especially the story behind Sonny (mad chapter on the bridesmaid that Sonny goes with at the wedding) and Luca Brazi (Fella who gets killed and sleeps with the fishes!)
