Been looking on a few of the actual websites on that website and it seems out of the shops in town, the Post office has the best rates.

Post Office rates online are different to that instore - much like many providers (Travelex for example)

If you're going to get money from them, order online to collect at store or you'll lose out.

you got a nationwide card? if so, just withdraw money from a cash machine in your chosen foreign country.

depends where he`s going. The Nationwide debit card  (Visa logo) NO LONGER gives free withdrawals for countries outside Europe. Just came into effect from early June. Nationwide are passing on the visa charges to customers. It:s 1% of whatever you take out.....but this is still a better deal than other banks who charge a couple quid plus commission (Nationwide dont charge the commission fee)

The cash card however (mastercard) allows free withdrawals......probably a matter of time before mastercard do the same. Obviously  you cant use it in store, only cash withdrawals at ATMs.

The VISA charge is still going to be less than the costs of exchanging with M&S etc

(Currently would be 1 GBP = 1.62 USD)

Aye, i just plan on using my nationwide debit card on holiday again this year like. Only annoying thing is that it doesn't tell you your balance so you don't know when youre about to run out of money. ???

Ah bollox, didn't know about Nationwide's new 1% charge. Going to China this summer and that, with the exchange rate, is going to be a pisser.

Was fantastic in Belize last year - I was getting $2.08 US for every pound at the start of my time there. At the end it had gone down to $1.70. I thought the bank was pulling a fast one as I hadn't had any access to UK news so had no idea about the meltdown.

I think that is about to change.........................

"Nationwide is to start charging credit and debit card holders for spending overseas but will keep its commission-free currency rates, it has emerged.

    * How to get the best travel cash and cards

The building society is therefore abandoning the strategy of completely free overseas card use that it has previously promoted.

It will start to pass on a 1% fee charged by Visa for transactions outside of Europe and associated countries, initially at a lower rate of 0.84% and at the full 1% from July.  Nationwide has previously covered this cost but has removed the benefit for debit and credit card spending and cash withdrawals. It will also apply to purchases from foreign websites.

The Nationwide cards still remain a good bet for overseas spending, as they do not load exchange rates against customers, which typically adds about 2.75% to spending costs.

The new charge Nationwide charge is only imposed by Visa outside of Europe and will apply to Nationwide's credit cards and FlexAccount Visa debit cards.

Customers with the basic FlexAccount cashcard have their service supplied by Mastercard and so will not be charged at the moment, but Nationwide says it is looking to introduce charges for these cards too.

The decision leaves the Post Office and Abbey's Zero credit cards as the only ones that do not charge a fee for use overseas.

But Abbey's Zero card has been temporarily pulled from the market for new customers, while the bank concentrates on a new credit card launch. It has said that Zero will return by May and still carry no foreign exchange fees.  Nationwide credit card customers will start to pay a fee of 0.84% from 6 May, while Visa debit card customers will pay the same amount from 1 June. The rate will rise to 1% from 1 July.  Nationwide has promoted the fee-free benefits of its credit cards and current accounts overseas and said that the existing fee was now being passed on to maintain its other main overseas benefit - not loading the exchange rate on transactions.

Asked why it had suddenly decided to start passing on the Visa fee, a Nationwide spokeswoman said: 'If you look at it in the scheme of things it's still a good deal. We have to ensure the product is sustainable in the long term.'  The loading of exchange rates typically adds around 2.75% to the cost of transactions and is widely used by most banks and credit card companies.  Nationwide announced that it was introducing the new 1% charge last Thursday in a product update informing people that its credit card purchase rates were increasing. The Gold credit card rate was raised from 15.9% to 16.9%, while the classic rate was raised from 17.9% to 19.9%.

The statement about the introduction of the overseas charge was included at the bottom of this press release in an additional information section.  But Nationwide has denied hiding the announcement in small print. The building society says it will be writing to customers to inform them of the changes. "

The exchange rate in Greece was better than it was in England 1.18 compared to 1.15 so it might be worth finding a forum for the place you are going and asking the people on there what its like in that country.
