Why do people on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire always use 'ask the audience' first?

I've had this argument with a few different people and in my opinion they should go like this:

1. Phone a friend - one person's guess

then

2. Ask the audience - many people's guesses

then

3. 50/50 - increases chance of correct guess to one in two

Surely statistically you're better doing it this way?

but if you only use one person for your first chance, and they are wrong, you will never get to use the greater numbers in the audience.

btw, its a shit show now, old hat .

edit....i thought you had let NE5 back on the forum then.

Agreed, and Chris Tarrant is a twat.

But generally people use 'ask the audience' early on (they always end up with like 90%+ on the right answer) - there's a good chance your friend will know the answer or at least back up your suspicions.

Because you'd probably want to save Phone a Friend for a friend that you know will know the answer to your question?

Normally they leave it until they're at a question they don't know the answer to though.

Depends who you ask I guess

I'd agree if these people's friend list includes a geography expert, a sports history expert, a literature expert etc etc. Most of the time they just seem to be other people with similar general knowledge. In which case you're canvassing one person rather than fifty or whatever.

I've just had an email from a top secret source, checked out the IP and it's from the ITV studios

Dave's thread is boring

Yeah, it does depend on the person. Its crazy though because these people never seem to know learned people. I have one person I know who could answer a Stephen Fry amount of questions, and I know other people who speak of people they know who are the same. So why do these contestants phone up Joe Bloggs? It doesn't make any sense.

I always tend to think the "Ask the audience" option is used just to confirm an answer the contenstant is about 90% sure of.

I think that if the question is later on, and is a bit tougher, then the chances are that a lot of the audience will just guess, you will get a fairly even spread across the 4 answers and therefore the wholething is basically pointless as it leaves the contenstant back at square one.

If its a tough question on say literature or art, I think the chances of the audience giving you an above 70-80% confirmation is pretty slim.

If any of that makes sense ?  :undecided:

If it's just for confirmation though surely asking one person will do?

If you're going for a pure guess (say you're on an amount where you can't lose), isn't it better to go with a majority vote from a much broader number of voters?

Yeah probably but I think if it was me sitting there, and there wasnt much of a majority going for one of the answers, it would just add more doubt in my mind (on a question where you werent guaranteed the amount).

But i agree with the consensus. Its shite, and I have never actually have never got into it if the truth be known. More recently, ut appeared that they seemed to go for far too many celebrity versions of it and I cant stand Chris Tarrant

Makes sense to me tbh.

You do 'Ask the Audience' for a question early on that you think most people would know but, for whatever reason, you don't happen to know yourself. If the vote is overwhelmingly in favour of one option then that's probably right.

You save 'phone a friend', where you can get a more definite opinion, for later on when there's bigger money at stake.
