SAO PAULO - Police in Brazil say former boxing champion Arturo Gatti has been found dead in a hotel room in the northeastern state of Pernambuco.

Police investigator Edislon Alves told The Associated Press that the body of the former junior welterweight champ was discovered Saturday morning in the posh seaside resort of Porto de Galinhas, where he arrived on Friday with his wife and 1-year-old son.

Alves said police were investigating. It was unclear how the 37-year-old Canadian died.

A spokeswoman for the public safety department said Gatti's wife and son were unhurt.

"There were no bullet or stab wounds on his body, but police did find blood stains on the floor," the spokeswoman said.

Gatti retired in 2007 with a record of 40-9 and 31 knockouts.

Apparantly evidence of a head wound, maybe got lamped by some form of weapon. He can't have seen it coming.

Shocking, when I 1st heard he died I thought it maybe drug related, after retiring I thought he may have found it tough. I wonder what did happen. Glad his family are unhurt.

Well his wife seems to be the main suspect. Apparently nothing had been stolen, plus it was at some fancy resort which would make it difficult for robbers.

There's no way he would have been killed by some robbers without guns/knives/a lot of them. It's easy to forget how rediculously hard professional boxers are compared to normal people.

I haven't seen that his wife is chief suspect, would be messed up it it was. Either way gutted that he is dead, the guy was one tough fighter, so much heart.

I definitely thought this guy's life would end badly. He took way too much punishment in the ring. YOu watch some of his fights and you credit his bravery and chin, but you also marvel at the number of shots he takes flush in the face. I'm surprised at the manner in which this has happened, but I'm not surprised that it has happened.
