Flintoff to retire from Test cricket

Andrew Miller at Lord's

July 15, 2009

Andrew Flintoff has called a press conference at 12.30pm today, in which he is widely expected to announce his retirement from Test cricket at the end of this Ashes summer, although he still intends to make himself available for Twenty20 and ODI cricket.

Flintoff, who has missed 25 of England's last 48 Tests through a variety of injuries, suffered another fitness scare on the eve of the Lord's Test, when he reported soreness and swelling in the same right knee that required surgery back in April, after he tore his meniscus while playing in the IPL.

Andy Flower, England's coach, remains optimistic that Flintoff will come through a fitness test today and make himself available for the Lord's Test, and he was seen skipping during England's warm-up in the indoor nets, before padding up for batting practice.

Prior to the practice, he was seen giving the team talk in a sombre atmosphere, after which Paul Collingwood immediately came up and shook him by the hand. When asked if Flintoff was set to retire from Test cricket, an ECB spokesman told Cricinfo to "wait and see".

More to follow.

Been on the cards for a while. Shame he never (that summer apart) really fulfilled his potential at the top of the game.

Great to watch mind, and will rightly remain a hero to England fans for 2005. One of the most exciting cricketers on the planet with both bat and ball.

Also if he has a decent, relatively injury free, 18 months expect him to be back for the next ashes.

This. I'm sure that will be in the back of his mind too, this will just allow him to concentrate on "bread and butter" cricket and get some fitness and consistent form together.

Wouldn't be all that surprised to see him give up on pretty much everything bar IPL mind.

The ECB have said he's still going to be playing in one-day matches.
