Surtees dies after F2 race crash

The son of motorsport legend John Surtees has died after being hit on the head by a wheel during a Formula 2 (F2) race at Brands Hatch in Kent.

Henry Surtees, 18, was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital after he was struck by a wheel which flew off Jack Clarke's car.

Sunday's race was red flagged while Surtees was removed from the scene.

His father won the Formula 1 World Championship in 1964 having previously won seven motorcycle world titles.

The accident happened between the circuit's Westfield Bend and Sheene Curve.

Clarke's car hit a tyre wall and a wheel came off, hitting Henry Surtees on the head, knocking him unconscious.

The teenager's car then collided with the trackside barriers.

A spokeswoman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said Surtees was taken from the scene by helicopter.

On Saturday, Surtees claimed his first F2 podium finish, coming third in the opening race of the Brands Hatch weekend.

No-one from Brands Hatch was available for comment.

Shit. The way that happened is so unlucky too. Obviously it would be anyway, but just how it happens is almost unbelievable.

18 too, awful, just awful. Poor lad.

Jesus, so unlucky.  Was it the initial hit from the tire that killed him or the collision with the wall?

The tyre knocked him unconscious, then he hit the wall, so was probably a bit of both.

EDIT: Actually, I've just heard that the tyre did kill him as it broke his neck.

Fuck me. It took me about 3 or 4 times to work out what the hell happened there. Obviously with the foreign commentary I couldn't tell what they were saying. I didn't even know which car he was in.

RIP :(

horribly unlucky, but the tyre should be tethered. I don't know if they were tethered and the tether failed or what, but it's not good enough

Jeez, that is horrible. It looks innocuous at the time, but to think that he was dead before he hit the wall is terrible.

Terrible shame. The way the tyre came down upon his head, rather across led me to believe he was gone before the wall :-[

I had to watch it twice to notice the tyre's bounce, but when you do notice it it is horrific, when you think they're quite heavy, for it to come down on someones head at that speed.. poor bloke.

I guess the scant consolation is that he must have died instantly? Surely?

For his sake I hope so. Poor sod. No age at all. A complete tragedy.

R.I.P.  :(

My guess judging from the video is that it would have been a pretty clean break, pretty much spontaneous.
