A 22-year-old alcoholic has died after being refused a life-saving liver transplant because he was too ill to leave hospital and prove he could stay sober.

Image should be put in a drink aware campaign, fuking hell that's haunting.

22 and liver beyond recovery. Why should someone who needs the liver more go back in the queue until he stopped drinking?  If he couldnt stop the drinking they would not transplant.  Just like they wont do vascular surgery on you while you continue to smoke.

slightly off topic but its amazing how cannabis is still illegal and very frowned upon but has never killed anyone and alcohol and tobacco are legal and encouraged (to a point) despite killing millions.

It' still early doors on the Cannabis although there is growing evidence it kills brain cells.  No point in making alchohol and tobacco ilegal because we have seen what happens in prohibition.

Best way, in the case of tobacco is to continue putting the squeeze on in terms of it being socially unacceptable and illegal to smoke in more and more areas.  Then, in the case of alcohol, educate more and more but this aint going to be easy since the bottom line is alcohol makes folks feel good.  Tobacco merely fuels a craving.

There's no doubt that cannabis has an affect on the brain, just like Haz says though it's still early days onto the extent of potential damage.

I drank fairly often when I was at uni and I'm sure many on here did/do/will.. but I'm sure I didn't drink nearly enough to get anywhere near needing a liver transplant. How much do you need to drink to get an addiction to this stuff? I just can't get my head around what it'd take.. I'm guess it's also specific on the personality on the person getting  addicted.

My best pal died at 27 of similar. He was also refused a transplant although at the time I doubt they were capable of doing the op without him bleeding to death. Something to do with the damaged liver not being able to produce enough of what it needs to make the blood clot. I'm sure someone with more medical knowledge will confirm this as the case.

Wasn't a nice way to watch someone go but to his credit my mate blamed no one but himself.

Perhaps now it brings home what a complete and utter cunt George Best actually was.

I knew loads of people in my teens who took cannabis and most of them ended up going to harder drugs. It is also no surprise that so far they have amounted to fuck all, still pissing about round the old estate. I know from personal experience that for some people, possibly most people, it is a downward spiral onto other drugs that will do harm. Best thing to do really is stay clear from what is illegal and get your buzz from sociably acceptable things like alcohol.

No doubt that will piss a few smokers off on here, but I can only say what I seen. Obviously not everyone ends up fucked.

They should show this lad's picture to teenage school kids. Infact his family should stop blaming the NHS for not doing a liver transplant and when they are strong enough should go round schools, with this lad's photo and tell the teenagers what happened to him because he was a binge drinker. Might frighten some of them into stopping.

Strange though it may sound I think everybody who needs help should get it. Not sure of the inns and outs of liver transplants but it is important always to try and save a human life.

There are many people with illnesses not caused by their own actions who are denied treatment. For example, did you know that people with leukemia over the age of 55 are not routinely given a bone marrow transplant? Is that fair?

Yeah but the point you made was about money, therefore the point I was making was that if it's about money then pay it.

So what would you get rid of to pay for the Liver transplant? Because there is only a finite amount of money that the NHS has, and only a finite amount of organs for transplant. What services would you be willing to get rid of to pay for every Liver transplant required? Where would you get the Livers from? How would you decide who needed an organ more?
