Have I been ripped off?

My hard drive fooked up at the weekend and after much pissing about I took it to the computer shop. I couldn't get windows to boot. The guy in the shop said if they could fix it without using any parts it'd be 45 quid. He rang today to say I needed a new hard drive. it'd be 50 quid for a 160gb or 60 quid for a 320gb and he said he'd be able to save all my data. I'm thinking now if my hard drive is goosed how can he rescue the data? Also is 105 quid reasonable for the work he's done?

Well yeah, but that's what computer shops do.

It's possible for the disk to be fucked but data to be recovered (it can be quite easy or it can require some tools to do it). For that price my guess is that he's just going to plug in a new drive and copy it over from the slightly gimped drive.

And for £60 you should be able to get a 1000GB hard disk on t'internet.

You can't really say, there's a possibility you have, just like anything else, however it could be a number of different things, I had a HDD once that was bust, wouldnt boot up because it couldnt be detected but worked alright as a slave.

But yeah, a lot of people here could do it for you if that is the case anyway.

Was just on Sky News yesterday morning computer shops ripping off customers. They had the webcam working on the laptop filming them without them knowing, and they fixed it quickly as it was a small problem and then made out like it was the motherboard failing and it would cost £100 to fix even though another computer shop fixed the small problem for free.

Buy the HD yourself and get them to do the transfer.

TBH unless you can ask him what the exact problem is you getting a transfer done for £50 and a refit of the HD if you are technically short in that department isn't too bad.

Some data rescuing even on a normal disc can be charged up to £5,000, some of it takes machines worth quarter of a mill to get data off and several days, sure your's isn't this case, but thats the range of things and without knowing what failed on the HD and whether you can do it yourself the price cannot really be said if its a rip or not imo.

Thing is you've already paid £45 no? If so get it fixed by them, if not try it yourself.

Buy the HD and as long as you've got the O/S disc a full reinstall in no bother while you can then run your fuked HD as a second drive and get all the info off it and chuck it. (that's what i would do in any HD failure or corruption)

Also taking peoples bank details and passwords.

Got an update today. It turns out the hard drive might be ok and it looks like a faulty motherboard. They can't fix it at the shop and would have to send it away. I'd be looking at 165 quid for that. I've told them I'll just take it back still broken. On the bright side they won't charge me as they didn't fix it. On the bad side my laptops still fooked. Where do I go from here?

£165 for a motherboard? I've not looked for a long time but my initial reaction is:

Edit - didn't realise it was for a laptop, oops. Probably about right then. For that kind of money you'd probably be better off saving up a bit more and getting a new one tbh.

bollocks. I was waiting for someone to say that. It cost me 200 quid reconditoned from currys online. A nice big 17" screen as well. It had a years warranty but I've worked out I've had a year and 2wks. The shop has offered me 50 quid for the parts.

If its a year and two weeks Currys might help you out as a sign of good will just being over.

It's probably 50/50 on whether £165 for a mobo and fitting is worth it or not. Price wise its expected, what are the spec of your lappy, its the only way to be sure you are doing the right thing by getting rid.

PS: You house insured? If so, drop it down the stairs...it fell out of you laptop bag when you were running up them.

He only paid £200 for it. He'd be better off doing that again.

I had a computer shop try to charge me for a new hard drive and data copy once, I took it somewhere else and it turned out the connection cable was just loose. He plugged it back in properly and it worked fine.

Not saying you are being ripped off, but always get a couple of different shops to look at it before you have anything done.

Depends on the type of laptop depending on how much it costs.  It sounds weird that it boots but just not into Windows, if it was the motherboard I am not 100% sure why this would affect it, guess there are multiple reasons why it could though.

As some have suggested, let people on here have a look.  If you don't want to splash out on a new laptop when potentially your current one is fine then that makes sense.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've just has a 2nd person looking at my laptop and it's officially died and gone to heaven. It's the motherboard apparently. Just wondering if anyone on here is after buying it for parts. It's a toshiba equium with a 19" screen. PM me if interested.
