Texting / Calls to Europe

Ok, I have just had my latest mobile phone bill through from Orange and I nearly shat myself at the cost of it. The main cost has been because I have started going out with a girl who lives in Germany, so texts and calls to her are costing me a ridiculous amount of money. So, does anyone know of any good deals on european sim cards or whatever that I could get which would help me get the cost down? Any advice appreciated (apart from the obvious dump her option, which I am not willing to do at the moment)

Isn't this what skype is for?

Skype is more expensive than a lot of other options and isn't an option for a lot of mobile phones.

We use skype for free calls when we are both at our computer but obviously there are times when we can't both be at our computers and need to get in touch with each other

Orange seem to be the cheapest regular network for this.

I have been looking around to find something cheaper myself but haven't managed it yet. Most networks seem to charge about the same rate. Definitely some price fixing going on there if you ask me.

TalkTalk do free calls to European landlines. Mobiles are just always going to cost a bomb, though.

Tesco mobile is 20p a min to call Germany, and 20p a text.

I cant remember what the company is called, but most shops now sell SIMs that are really cheap for calls abroad... For instance Tesco sell them at the check outs, and our uni was promoting them to foreign exchange students...man, its on the tip of my tongue!

Too many people are obsessed with Skype. It's really not the best solution for everyone, as some peeps are making out.

But i'm confused why you can't just use it? I used it with the Spanish girl I was seeing.

Can someone explain to me why any call to another country, via satellite(other than gross profit) should cost anything more than ringing next door?

because people will believe caling further should cost more. the companies know this and act price accordingly.

skype is very good. msn eyc is good but skype in my opinion is better.
