Newcastle's bid to begin a relegation revival this weekend has received fresh impetus after it emerged that three of Glenn Roeder's most important players are all in contention to make their first-team comebacks at the City of Manchester Stadium.

The Magpies have slipped into the Premiership drop zone following a run of seven league games without a win but, having secured a dramatic Carling Cup win at Watford on Wednesday evening, shattered confidence has been restored in the United dressing room.

Having excelled in knock-out competitions this season, Roeder's men know they must take their cup form into the top-flight if they are to recover from what has been a difficult start to the league season. Their efforts will be aided by the imminent returns of Kieron Dyer, Obafemi Martins and Shay Given - with all three expected to be in contention for Saturday's encounter with Manchester City.

Dyer has offered to make himself available for Newcastle's last two fixtures, despite having suffered a bizarre eye injury that threatened to have serious implications for his long-term vision. The 27-year-old has explored the possibility of wearing protective goggles in order to expedite his comeback.

And although Roeder has vetoed such a course of action, he is hoping the specialist overseeing Dyer's recovery will be amenable to the prospect of the midfielder playing some part in Manchester. "We are waiting for the green light from the specialist," explained the Magpies boss, aware that a fully-fit Dyer could transform the complexion of a stuttering Premiership campaign. "We are totally in the hands of the specialist, he will make the decision. If he says Kieron can head the ball and go into challenges in which there is a danger of a bump or a bruise without any ill effects, then he will be straight back in."

Dyer damaged delicate blood vessels in his left eye when he ran into a post during a routine training ground accident two weeks ago; the England international is expected to visit the specialist within the next 24 hours and although he has not trained fully with his team-mates for a fortnight as a precaution, Roeder is confident his general fitness will not prove problematic.

"He's not training fully yet because of the contact aspect," he said. "But he has been working hard on keeping his fitness levels up on his own. Fortunately, we have been able to keep Kieron fit and his physical fitness, his football fitness, is not a problem. He has chance for the weekend. But that's all it is at this stage. A chance."

Martins is also closing in on his comeback, having missed United's last four first-team fixtures with the hamstring problem he suffered two weeks ago during Newcastle's Carling Cup win against Portsmouth.

The £10m Nigerian is determined to resume action in a black-and-white shirt and, given the paucity of striking options Roeder has at his disposal, the progress the club's number nine has made in recent days will be a welcome bonus. United's medical staff will monitor Martins closely over the next 48 hours to make sure that his problems are truly behind him.

"With it being a hamstring injury, we have to be absolutely certain he's okay, especially with it being him because he's such a sprinter," said Roeder. "But he's back out running on the grass again and he's a possibility for the weekend."

Given is also hoping to return to the first-team squad having missed the last two months as a result of the bowel problem he suffered during United's win at West Ham - their last in the league - on September 17. Roeder added: "Shay is back out there training fully and that's very pleasing to see."

martins and dyer sound very touch and go from this.

but if they could both play some part - the last 25 minutes or so, it would be a massive improvement.

i wouldn't mind us trying to hold on and wear them down a bit, and then introduce two of the paciest players around!

Your clutching at straws if you think this will save us.....

We need a strike force, nothing more nothing less.

Without goals you loose.

Neither are goal scorers, and i do include Martins in that.

And with them back, we still have nowt.

Prefer Harper to Given.

Martins is not a footballer, what's Dwain Chambers up to at the moment?

Boro are signing him.

Should be alright for Dyer because I do remember Bobby Robson saying he was a freak as in he could jump back into matches straight away and you wouldn't actually realise he'd been injured due to his freakishly high fitness levels.

From tonights Chronicle - probably no Martins for Citeh.

Roeder insists that Oba Martins feels he can form a partnership with Sibierski and the pair of them certainly gave Middlesbrough plenty of problems in the defeat at the Riverside Stadium before the Frenchman limped off with a foot injury.

However, Saturday will probably come too soon for a re-emergence of the Sibierski-Martins link-up as the £10m man slowly edges closer to being fit after his hamstring injury

!!!! I would like to show my support to Dave's cause here !!!!

What the hell is up with capitalisation? Please use them in thread titles, especially on surnames! This just looks stupid.

And page breaking links? tut tut tut, some people need to learn some forum manners  :winking:

What the hell kind of training routine caused Dyer to run into a post? Pin the tail on the donkey?  blueconfused.gif

PS: I hope Dyer is playing too. Remember that open goal against us a few years back? His selection could be enough to save us from the inevitable bite on the arse from Sibierski...

You just know for a fact McDermott & Clark were spinning him around egging on little Kieron with his blindfold and tail in hand.

the negativity on this board is stunning! There's precious little to cheer about with NUFC at the moment, but no matter how you slice it, having players available for selection again can only be good news.

Seems like there's a group of people who would prefer to lose so that they can carry on moaning

Has Harper done enough to keep his place? I'm not sure Given can walk back in

Harper's performance has been far from laughable, and it would be idiotic to think so. Bar his error at Liverpool (that effectively meant nowt anyway, we were never going to equalise), he's done a decent job in-between the sticks while Given has been away. Some of the saves he has pulled off have been quality, Given-esque at times.

He hasn't been mindblowing, but he's done a tidy job while Shay's been out, and i'd still be surprised if there are a huge amount of Number 2s in this division that are better than Harper...

Happy days - reckon it would be a bit harsh on Harper if he was dropped straight away - but then again Given is our best player so perhaps he should just walk straight back into the team... Cannot say that about any of the others... Reckon Dyer and Martins might get 20 mins or so... Was at this fixture last season - was my first away match and god we were poor.. Not one decent shot on target... At least Souness got the boot the following day though lol
