Prisoners Make Hooch Out Of Swine Flu Gel

An alcohol-based anti-bacterial hand gel has been banned from a Dorset prison after inmates managed to get drunk off it and started fighting.

Prisoners from HMP The Verne were making hooch from the handwash, because of its high alcoholic content.

The gel had been put on the wing to help stop the spread of swine flu, but was removed after one man had shown signs of being intoxicated on September 21.

It had been reported that inmates were bare-knuckle boxing for money at the jail on the Isle of Portland.

The Prison Officers Association (POA) said it had previously criticised senior management at the jail for putting the alcoholic gel into the facility.

We raised concerns whether prisoners would be able to adulterate it and add fruit and water and sugar to make it into what is in prison parlance as "hooch"

Peter McParlin, Prison Officers Association

Pete McParlin, POA representative, said: "They would have been advised to listen to the local POA committee in the first place.

"We raised concerns whether prisoners would be able to adulterate it and add fruit and water and sugar to make it into what is in prison parlance as 'hooch'."

The prisoner management had already assured the local POA they had looked into the possibility of inmates getting high from the gel and said it could not happen, he said.

Prison officers have described inmates intoxicated by drinking hooch as being worse than if they were on drugs.

"Prisoners with drinks which have extremel alcoholic content become extremely violent with consequences on health and safety."

It is not the first time hand gel has caused trouble in the area. Dorset County Hospital had to remove dispensers from the entrance to their building after finding several vagrants drinking from them.
