Anyone here have family that were closely involved?

I do (well did - sadly rip.gif now) - in the trenches and mustard gassed in 1916. Survived somehow to become my favourite grandad - playing footie with me in his slippers when he was 87.

My closest is my Great Grandad, he was older than most at the time and served as a medic I understand - apparently involved running out of the trenches and collecting men. Not a nice job, as you might imagine.

My Grandad volunteered at the age of 30 in 1914 - eventually gassed  and invalided out  in 1917

The wife's grandad volunteered as a private on day 1 and left as an officer in 1919

he was on the western front in '14 and finished the war about 10 miles from where he'd started 4 years before

The wifes father flew Swordfishes and Albacores on night strikes against the Jorman & Italian  ships out of Malta

My Uncle was in the DLI and fought at Casino - he only talked about it once

My Dad finished the war in Jakarta , driving around town with a jeep full of Japanese NCO's shootin g up the nationalists who didn't want the Dutch back
