THE "husband" divorced by Little Britain star Matt Lucas ten months ago hanged himself yesterday.

Kevin McGee, 32, who wed the comic in a 2006 civil ceremony, left a suicide note on FACEBOOK.

It declared: "Kevin McGee thinks death is much better than life."

Tormented McGee was found hanged at his flat by cops who dramatically broke in at 8am.

The 32-year-old TV producer had posted his despairing message on the social networking website three hours earlier.

Last night Lucas, 35, was described as "utterly destroyed" by his former love's suicide - just three years after the couple threw a spectacular "panto" party to celebrate their civil partnership.

A friend of the pair, whose split was the first celebrity gay divorce after same-sex marriage became legal, said: "Matt was floored when he heard the news.

"He always loved Kevin despite their differences and their difficult marriage."

Little Britain star Lucas - who returned to BBC2 this summer in spoof game show Shooting Stars - dumped McGee over his drug-taking.

Yesterday friends told how following the divorce his habit got worse His pitiful message was posted on Facebook at 5am and police went to his apartment in Edinburgh's swanky Bruntsfield district after a fearful pal alerted them.

Tragically, other friends continued to post replies on Facebook yesterday - unaware that cocaine-loving McGee was dead.

One who commented on his brooding message wrote: "That's a bit dark, Kev!"

Only a week earlier McGee had seemed in good spirits, declaring playfully on the same site: "Kevin thinks there's nothing he can't face... except for bunnies."

McGee, who had undergone spells in rehab, regularly blew huge sums on cocaine and would stay high for days with no sleep.

He and Lucas met before the funnyman shot to fame.

In December 2006 the couple got hitched at a register office - celebrating in style afterwards with a glittering panto-themed wedding reception. Elton John, Will Young and Paul O'Grady were among stars in fancy dress who were guests at the London bash.

Lucas donned an Aladdin outfit while McGee went as Prince Charming.

But friends said the marriage was doomed by McGee's increasing use of drugs, which Lucas hated.

One said: "Kevin found it really difficult to deal with Matt's fame. Being thrust into the world of A-list parties and free booze and drugs was hard.

"Matt is a pretty down to earth guy and never touches drugs. Cracks started to show in the marriage because as much as Matt loved Kevin he couldn't deal with his behaviour."

The chum added: "They had awful rows. In the end Matt just said he couldn't deal with it any more."

The pair separated in June last year and officially divorced in December - with Lucas citing McGee's "unreasonable behaviour". Lucas is now seeing someone else. But a friend of McGee - who was studying for a degree - said: "He didn't appear suicidal."

A neighbour said: "A month ago he got a labrador puppy. He seemed a nice guy with no signs of any obvious problems. He never mentioned Matt Lucas."

Lucas - currently starring in West End play Prick Up Your Ears - admitted to a gay paper last month the break-up was tough.

But he said: "I'm in a much better place than I was. Time is a great healer."

Little Britain star Matt Lucas has pulled out of his lead role in a London play after the death of his former partner Kevin McGee.

McGee, 32, was found hanged at his Edinburgh flat after police broke in on Monday, the Sun newspaper has reported.

The television producer had updated his Facebook status to "Kevin McGee thinks death is better than life," just hours before, the paper said.

Lucas has left Prick Up Your Ears until further notice, producers confirmed.

Lucas's part will now be played by understudy Michael Chadwick.

Matt Lucas's agent said the actor had no comment to make.

'Found dead'

In a statement, police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

"(We) were called to an address in Bruntsfield Gardens, Edinburgh, at around 8am yesterday morning where a 32-year-old man was found dead.

"There are no suspicious circumstances, and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal."

McGee's former employer, London production company Carbon Media, said: "Kevin McGee remained very close to the company's heart."

A spokesperson said it extended "deepest condolences to his family and friends".

The former couple met before the major television success of BBC comedy series Little Britain.

They wed in a lavish pantomime-themed ceremony in December 2006 but Lucas was granted a dissolution in October 2008 on the grounds of unreasonable behaviour by his partner.
