I was watching Thomas and Friends earlier with Ben, and an artisit came to do a nice painting of Percy. It got me thinking about art today. This is my onion, I'm no expert on the subject, and don't proffess to be.... But It staggers me, that someone is willing to fork out thousands for a bucket full of sand, or an unkempt bed with a mess around it, or a sawn in half cow in a glass box!

It seems to me, someone who projects themselves as knowing what they're talking about, can fool every rich clot to jump on his/her bandwagon, and to buy utter rubbish. I often wonder if I popped over to the baltic with a porfolio of utter crap, but spoke of my work with a positive attitude and waved my arms about a lot, and pointed to the sky a bit, and kissed everyones cheek, and said "Mwah" while doing it, and stood in front of other exhibits for 3 hours with my hand on my chin, would they make me a millionaire?

Iuam, art is the........ art of picking up a brush, some paint and recreating a field or woman on canvas, or knocking some scaffolding up in the Sistine Chapel.

I get exposed to a lot more amateur modern art around town, and part of the problem you see is that art students are dumb.  They speak muddled messages out through the medium of their 2nd rate abilities.  Art shows at this level are more about getting laid, anyway.

"So what does the crowbar represent?"

"That is the slavery of taxation."

"And why is it propping open the anus of this half-man, half-shark?"

"He represents the lower middle class."

"Fantastic.  Let's go fuck."

"Ok."

At issue though is whether such modern pieces are "art".  I would still say yes.  It's just not fit for public consumption, not because of some highbrow interpretation that only the select, lucky intelligent few can decipher, but because that not who it's intended for.

I don't think many here would rate modern art too highly unless they're a wannabe pretentious know-it-all, but there are some things that you have to appreciate, like this:

I'm guessing that's modern art. ???

Depends.

You're fairly stuck in your ways though aren't you?  I mean you think newer models of mobile phone and the SCS sale are scams sent to bedevil the days of man too.

I never said newer models of phone were scam! I said I didn't want a phone with which I wouldn't use 85% of its' applications! All I want to do, is text, and take decent photos, not create an HMV warehouse!

There's a lot of great "modern" art (whatever that means) about - it's a field with so much variety that anyone should be able to find something they like - art today can still a painting or a sculpture as well as a video, a photo, or some kind of installation. Some of it is simply kind of cool to look at - interesting, funny or impressively done. Not everything needs to have meaning, no matter how some will obsess over it. Some modern art can be interesting and provoke a bit of thought - but I personally find it rare to really feel it.

There is plenty of utter toss out there, but it's daft to say modern art is shit just because Tracey Emin presented a tent as art (or any other example to you care to mention) and gets a lot of attention. From time to time the Baltic puts on really good exhibitions and it's well worth a visit every couple of months.

I dunno. I see quite a lot of art, I suppose, but I know almost nothing about art, tbh. Everything I see I judge on its own merits and how I respond to it. Should I have to take a 40-week course in art appreciation to 'get' something? Fuck that. For sure, though, a lot of contemporary art is just utter balls for elitist cunt-muscles.

By art you mean porn don't you? I mean that's what everyone has their secret folder on their computer incase their lass finds it. Of course she won't want to look at 'art'. Especially when it's child art.

I don't have a porn folder no more; it's only plebs like Dave who are unable to take advantage of modern-day porn-streaming technologies.

Some modern art is fine. Guernica is technically "modern art" and that's breathtaking. Most, certainly the last 20 years opr so, is an insult to the eyes, and depends on pompous art "critics".

Always remember a Hammer Horror movie about one such where the critic sneered at an artists work, who then set him up by having him praise an absolute mess (done by a chimp) an showing him  up for what he was. And he, to me, could have been any of the people passing themselves off as experts for the past 30 years.

I think it just distracts from truly great art which is still out there, but they aren't getting the stage BECAUSE of the "pile of bricks" a "dark room with lights out" or whatever insult to ALL the senses the "experts" are raving over this time.

Toons Taylor - that's GREAT ! ;D

Depends on what you mean by modern? Modern art includes artists like Picasso, Van Gogh, Rodin etc.

Abstract expressionism, pop-art (Warhol and by extension Hirst etc) is postmodern art.

Surely Post Modern art should be called modern art,  what happens to the new wave of art Post-Post Modern art?

Not at all, its just a classification mechanism, postmodernism is art which 'rejects or reacts against' trends in modernism.

Most of the funny weird shit that you think 'i could do that' is in fact postmodernist art. Modern art is now quite old and was named 'modern' because all art that preceded it was 'classical' art and was steeped in traditions going back to Greek and classical times.

I prefer Art Brut anyway.
