I'd like to think that Newcastle fans would partake in a blanket boycott of whoever gets the naming rights but I know it wouldn't happen, we're too bloody soft. You just have to look at the amount of pricks wandering round town with Sports Direct carrier bags to realise that.

Give over.

Why should I pay £70 or whatever for astroturf trainers, shorts and socks elsewhere when I can get the same for half of that price there?

My point exactly. Personally I'd rather pay a grand for them than line his pockets any more than I have to. There are clubs where it would happen - Liverpool for example.

And it's one of the reasons why I hate that club with a passion.

I don't like them either but at least they stand up for themselves. We just bend over and grab our ankles under the guise of not upsetting the applecart, even when the applecart is flying down a hill straight into a brick wall.

I just don't see how boycotting Sports Direct would do anything apart from dent my own bank balance tbh.

"Being a fan is about supporting your club all the time, and your board when it deserves it.”

“Dissent is the highest form of being supporter”

"A board hiding behind a football clubs name is the last refuge of the scoundrel.”

Even the scummy mackems who at the time when knacker Ashley first took us over said they would never shop at Sport Direct still went bought there Donnay socks from him

On the subject of Donnay socks I admire the fact that you think they all the same but each pair has  a subtle difference, which can cause drama when you have one in hand & your looking for its mate.

Apologies if it's been mentioned already but, surely the timing of this announcement is important. It came at the same time as the appointment of Hughton as manager and Ashley staying on as owner. I guess this news was meant to overshadow both. It may be that after a suitable period of deflection that it will announced that Ashley won't rename the stadium because the Geordies didn't want it. In the mean time the main news has been glossed over.

Alternatively, in Ashley's world, everything has its price. If, in the unreal world, we were offered £100million per year for the stadium naming rights, would anyone complain? Really, would anyone complain? From that starting point, Ashley will then work down to the minimum point on the graph where what he gets will compensate for the fans fury. Sadly, we know that Ashley will consider the point where 10p crosses outright disgust to be okay.

Not sure I've made sense...

I agree that it does look like a deliberate attempt at a diversion.

Many (maybe most) of us knew a sale wasn't going to happen any time soon, and had been a convenient excuse to spend nothing all summer. Nevertheless, confirmation of this was never going to go down well.

Drop this bombshell and then later say "we have considered fans views and won't rename the stadium" is a handy way of covering up the whole non-sale and the mess, uncertainty and lack of squad numbers it has created.

Saying that, anything is possible with a cumhead like Ashley.

Ex-Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd blasts decision to sell St James' Park naming rights

Former chairman Freddy Shepherd has weighed into the furious row over Newcastle owner Mike Ashley's highly-controversial plans to sell the naming rights of St James' Park, insisting: 'There are some things money can't buy.'

Shepherd, who made himself a target for a torrent of criticism in his time as Newcastle chief, revealed he rejected out of hand the chance to trade the name of the club's proud citadel following flotation in 1997.

Ashley announced late on Tuesday that he had aborted attempts to sell the club for a second time after failing to find a buyer to meet his £80million asking price.

The sports retail magnate also confirmed caretaker boss Chris Hughton as manager on a permanent deal and revealed he was pumping another £20m into the club this week.

But the disclosure that Ashley is willing to rename St James' Park next season has provoked a storm of protest from fans. It is seen as a further damning indictment of Ashley's troubled tenure, and Shepherd said: 'I suppose nothing surprises me about the current regime, so news they are ready to sell the naming rights isn't exactly a shock.

'I appreciate we are living in a commercial world, but there are some things money can't buy.

'St James' Park is one of the most famous stadia, not just in Europe but in the world. You can go anywhere and everyone knows St James' Park is the home of Newcastle United. The two are synonymous.

'I just can't imagine St James' Park being called anything else. Whatever next? Why don't they just go the whole hog and change the name of the club itself?

'Fans will be horrified, angry and upset about this. They've had to put up with a lot in recent months, but this is just another blow.'

Shepherd added: 'I can remember when we had the chance to change the name of the ground when I was chairman. It was just after flotation and big-name companies were falling over themselves to get involved in football - and back then, Newcastle were right up there with the Manchester Uniteds, Liverpools and Arsenals.

'We were offered something like £3m for a five-year deal. The branding specialists didn't reveal the identity of the interested parties, but the money could have been 10 times that and I would still not have been interested.'

I'm not too bothered tbh. If we had a decent owner who just needed to earn money for the club, I'd definitely be all for it as it is just a way of getting cash. The reality is that the stadium can be renamed, but no-one can stop the fans and the media from calling the stadium by its real name of SJP.

My only real misgivings would be related to the permanancy of the deal. This money is unlikely to reach the club in terms of transfers, so if it was permanent I'd be worried that someone else couldn't sell it in the future, and I'd be worried that it could increase the cost of any future new stadium if it involves having to pay off the sponsor for breach of contract.

Would this not have to be agreed by the council or something? Considering Newcastle United don't actually own the stadium?

We do own the stadium. We lease the land off the council.

Ah right I see, I thought it was the stadium that they owned.

I doubt Ashley has any intention of selling off the name of the Stadium. He has quite simply got folk irate that such a thing is 'up for sale' when all he has done is turned away attention from the fact he's appointed a grade A clown as manager and is no longer (was he ever?) selling up and moving on.

In any case - to those who matter, it'll always be St James' Park.
