NUFC Statement - Sunday Sun

Following an article that appeared as a back page lead in the Sunday Sun on 10 January 2010, headlined 'Desert-ers Leave Toon', Newcastle United, having taken exception to the accuracy, tone, inference and content of the article, contacted the Sunday Sun to seek a full back page retraction of the said article in the following Sunday's paper (17 January).

The retraction was not forthcoming in the manner requested and as such the Club have banned the Sunday Sun, indefinitely, from St. James' Park and the Training Ground.

That was the one about Ashley and Llambias fucking off to Vegas.

Ashley and Llambias head off to Las Vegas

Jan 10 2010 by Neil Farrington, Sunday Sun

NEWCASTLE owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias have been busy early on in the transfer window . . . in Las Vegas.

While United manager Chris Hughton started his bid to sign the players to boost the club’s priceless promotion campaign, his bosses flew to the States at the start of the week.

Hughton has been promised money to spend in January, but will have needed to confer with Newcastle’s top brass on whether to up his bid for Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford.

The purpose of Ashley and Llambias’ trip to the world’s gaming capital is unknown, although Llambias is a former boss of now-closed London casino 50 St James and once managed a similar club in Vegas.

While the duo were away, the Newcastle United Supporters’ Trust’s attempt to buy Ashley out picked up pace, with Newcastle City Council revealing it will consider giving the fans’ bid its official backing.

Newcastle’s search for new firepower is becoming ever more urgent as the Championship chasing pack hunt them down.

It's a completely pointless banning. They're in exactly the same room as the Chronicle and Journal and so will just send a reporter and say they're from there

Assuming this means the article is inaccurate, I don't have a problem with them banning the Sunday Sun from the club for it.  The local press shouldn't be shit stirring during the transfer window, it helps no one.

There would be no journalists at Press Conferences if club banned them for publishing inaccurate stories.

Should have just let it go. Tomorrow's chip wrappers and all that.

Exactly. The owners do enough shit stirring as it is.

It's the all new 100% honest Newcastle United board.

Having been (rightly) hammered by the press for lying to the fans, there's a certain irony in the Sunday Sun printing something which misleads the fans.

It's a nothing story from what is a bit of a joke of a newspaper. True or untrue I can't see how this story deserves shutting the door on an entire publication given some of the stuff published nationally about every club.

It just looks as if it's Ashley flexing his muscles to try and scare off similar stories from other publications. Unfortunately for the Sunday Sun he's picked on what he believes to be the smallest newspaper.

The Sunday Sun should just run with a story saying what a bunch of cunts Ashley and Llambias are. Nothing inaccurate about that. :)
