Bates and Beckford

Ken Bates has attempted to screw as much money out of whoever is interested in Beckford, but in my opinion he has shot himself in the foot.

There is now talk of not letting him go for less than £10m in this transfer window.  Whatever you think of that rumour, in my view they will get absolutely nothing for him.  He will refuse to go in Jan regardless of who comes in for him because of the signing on fee he can command in June.

Bates has outgunned himself on this one because he never thought Beckford would propel himself so far into the limelight.  He probably thought he might be able to rack NUFC up to £3m, well now he will get zero because of his greed.  Not that that helps us but quite satisfying anyway to see Bates lose his gamble.

Promotion is not guaranteed even with Beckford, as Norwich are chasing as indeed are Charlton, so Leeds may end up in the playoffs, and if they miss out and lose Beckford the gamble will have failed.

Better to keep him and secure promotion and the money that comes with that, than to sell him and possibly miss out on more by missing out on promotion. Fair play by Bates in this scenario, imo.

Agree. Those TV games against Premiership clubs in the cup won't hurt Leeds' bank balance either.

Anyway, the player has the power. Even if Leeds wanted to sell Beckford to Newcastle he wouldn't leave knowing he is off to Everton in the Summer.

Thought Beckford had agreed to go to Everton in the summer?

So says the Sun, Grayson said it was discussed but not certain i think

Fraser Forster has kept 14 clean sheets in 25 games for Norwich.  :celb:

This gamble increases their odds of success by loads, though. A risk worth taking.

The £10mill was not a price tag it was Grayson saying thet they were right to keep him but if he was offered £10mill

"Of course, if someone offers me £10m then it may be different but otherwise he will be at the club at the start of next month."
, we HAVE/HAD offered more before the Spuds cup tie it was also rejected. Close to £2mill I hear.

Grayson is just saying they won't consider an offer unless it's ridiculous, then they will have to seriously consider it. They don't seriously expect £10m for him, which is why they're expecting him to stay until the summer at least.

Bates says in the Telegraph that we offered £1.8m before his "FA Cup heroics" and Beckford wanted to come to us but they decided  to reject it.

Which is £2.25m in total considering the sell on clause

This.

Keep him and increase chances of promotion = cash.

Sell him, make cash quickly and then potentially find that the club isn't relegated = offsets the short-term benefit of selling.

Hence the "it'd have to be an offer that was too good to refuse" point, as it'd have to keep the club in pocket as well as mitigating any potential financial loss due to a failure to get promoted.

Bates rejected Becks bid

Magpies tabled £1.8m for Leeds striker

Last updated: 25th January 2010

Leeds United chairman Ken Bates claims he turned down a £1.8million offer from Newcastle for striker Jermaine Beckford.

The 26-year-old, who has been the face of this season's FA Cup, is out of contract in the summer and available on a free transfer.

Beckford enhanced his credentials at the weekend with a brace in Leeds' 2-2 draw at Spurs after bagging the winner against Manchester United at Old Trafford earlier this month.

Manager Simon Grayson is reportedly looking for sky-high offers in the region of £10million for the marksman and Bates has revealed he knocked back £1.8m from the Magpies.

The Whites' supremo admits the striker was keen on a move to St James' Park, although the club will have the final say on his future if he leaves before the summer.

Decision

"I have always said the Beckford decision was down to Simon Grayson," Bates told The Telegraph.

"We could have picked up a quick £1.8million cash from Newcastle for Beckford's transfer and Becks wanted to go.

"But Simon has always said he would do what was best for Leeds United and that means getting promotion, which is what we are doing.

"I am not particularly impressed with his (Beckford's) agent but as long as Jermaine stays on the pitch and scores goals I think all the fans will be happy and that is the important thing - the fans being happy in the short and long term."

The "£10 million Harewood" just plonk that next another £10 million rated player Martin Phillips. Alan Ball (RIP) once said Martin Phillips would become the countries 1st £10 million player...........when at Man City Alan signed Martin for £500K.
