Bramble boost for Glenn

Nov 16 2006

By Luke Edwards, The Journal

Titus Bramble has softened the blow of Celestine Babayaro's latest strain by declaring himself fit for the trip to Arsenal at the weekend.

Bramble trained for the first time in almost two weeks yesterday and is expected to return to the centre of defence alongside Craig Moore at the Emirates Stadium.

That would mean Peter Ramage playing at left back, with Steven Taylor on standby to play on the right if Stephen Carr has not recovered from the toe injury which forced a premature end to his involvement against Manchester City last weekend.

Bramble's contract runs out at the end of the season, but while it does not look as though the 25-year-old is going to be given a new one, he remains Glenn Roeder's first-choice centre half despite some high-profile mistakes this season.

For his part, Bramble (pictured left) has refused to hide after his early-season lapses and has told Roeder he will continue to give his all for the team and has not given up hope of landing a new deal at St James's Park.

United's meagre defensive resources are almost at breaking point and an injury to any of the four defenders who will play in Newcastle's first visit to Arsenal's new stadium would be a disaster for everyone except the 19-year-old Paul Huntington.

The Carlisle-born centre back, a 6ft 3inch graduate from the Academy, has not managed a single first-team appearance for United, but has been on the bench a handful of times and is the next in line for the senior team if Roeder suffers more injury problems.

Babayaro, who has managed just 59 appearances since a £1m move from Chelsea in January 2005 because of injury, will be missing for at least a fortnight with a groin problem and Olivier Bernard has picked up a hip injury before he has even managed to regain match fitness following his free transfer return to the club in August.

The Journal understands the Magpies are monitoring Matthew Upson's situation at Birmingham as the England international returns from eight months out with a cruciate knee ligament injury.

However, United are likely to face competition from Liverpool, who beat them in the race to sign striker Dirk Kuyt from Feyenoord in the summer.

With Carr, and Babayaro injured,we need all the defenders we have to be fit.I dont want to see Duff playing as left back. But with Roeder in charge, anything can happen.

Well it gives us 4 defenders and he has been betting since the club said they would listen to offers for him.

We only had Taylor, Moore and Ramage fit so atleast now we won't have to ggive Huntington a baptism of fire and give him  a start away to the Gooners.

why not try bambi as a right back in london?

he is not too slow, is strong, his mistakes might not be quite as costly...

He's IS slow, clumbersome, hesitant, with terible lapses in concentration,  thick and a terrible reader of the game, we should have got rid years ago, i  woulden't play him in the reserves personally. He's cost us more games/points than any other player i can remember and playing with him must be very demoralising as the crowd are nervous evertime he goes near the ball (so are the players), he's been a cancer to our club, its definately long overdue and time to say goodbye and don't even be thinking about coming back!

Its not his fault that all of his managers love him :/

To be fair, Milner's cross for the Spanish prick's goal against Palermo was from the left, and neither Duff nor the Zog are doing much, so fair do's really...

Milner seems to play better on the left, cutting inside like Joe Cole (not as good like), Dyers best position imo is Right wing or up front and Zoggy's plays better than the other two in the center.

when we haven't got the ball its more of a 451 trying to get the ball back and when we have the ball its more of a 433 Dyer and Milner running into the channels up front with Martins.
