I'll be living in Newcastle starting August because I'll be attending University, as far as I know friends who have lived and studied there have recommended living in Jesmond, anywho I dont wish to stay in a dorm for my first year and Id much rather find me a good flat to stay in, anyone know a good area not too far off the city centre?, I suppose I can find some decent flats advertised around the internet as well?

Why don't you want to stay in halls? Best way to experience it imo.

On a more helpful note, I live in Sandyford which has all you need really. Walking distance from Heaton, Jesmond, the Quayside and the City Centre, tolerable mix of students and normals, a Metro station (Jesmond metro is closer to me than the majority of Jesmond), some decent small shops, right at the junction of two of the main roads in the city which is a Godsend if you drive and not too expensive. Can't knock it.

Despite living there myself, Jesmond costs you another £100+ per month just for the status. Sandyford is remarkably underpriced given it's location to town and Osborne Road.

Really pleased I've lived in Sandyford this year, nice place and geographically very convenient. Would definitely recommend it, particularly since it's more than reasonably priced.

I'll be checking anything advertised online before I actually head out to Newcastle and check the properties out, for now I've been using this among others.

http://www.patrobsonproperty.com , If anyone knows anything good online do tell me please! I've been looking through their options in Heaton, Jesmond, Fenham and Sandyford like everyone here mentioned. Its a shame the quality flats dont allow students.

  • 2 weeks later...

Searching has been a pain, all the good apartments arent allowed to have students rent them, the rest are just shocking.

http://www.findaproperty.com/displayprop.aspx?edid=00&salerent=1&pid=5671673 -> Very tempting, but not for students according to their site.

http://www.findaproperty.com/displayprop.aspx?edid=00&salerent=1&pid=6050188 -> And again  :undecided:

http://www.dezrez.com/DRApp/Search.ASP?WCI=Particular&WCE=001420500&CURRENCY=GBP

Both those two are tempting as well, I just dont know if they offer them to students or not, will give them a ring later, for now, mainly focued on Jesmond/Newcastle City Center, as I have the budget, 500-600GBP pcm.

Isnt it all part of the tenant contract? They'll find it out one way or the other no? Given the birth date and all.

Shouldn't really matter, I'm at Uni in Manchester yet living in an apartment advertised to professionals and is well out of the way of the student areas.

There is nothing in our contract about being professionals etc.

If agents are being a pain in regards to the student / professionals issue then don't use an agent, last two places I've rented we have skipped the agent and dealt directly with the landlord.

Bit of an assumption to presume every under-25 looking for a property is a student

Thats not exactly what I assumed, I've not seen the tenant contract I've assumed that has something that will give away details that im a student, visa information or whatnot. Mind you, I've never signed a contract with a property renting agency before so I obviously do not know what will be needed, see when I find the perfect flat I'll start making the calls and visits, but im glad to hear Greg's story.

All your letting agents will want to know what you're doing. The fact is not all landlords want to let out their nice-looking places to students, for obvious reasons. You must be absolute minted, btw, fancy lending me a tenner?

Hardly, a lifetime of savings does nicely, saving up money is nice.  O0
