Good news it's a cracker!! But is a totally new kind of Bond, bought upto date in an intersting way. It only falls down in that they tried to bolt on a solid  love interest which is clunky at best.

Don't miss the opening on foot chase.

the review I read said the love interest was crucial to the plot, and was only believable after you see Bond make mistakes

The love interest was not so crucial to the plot, if you see the film you'll realise this Vic. Ps I don't read reviews. A Bond love interest that takes up almost half an hour of the film which comes in at a staggering 167min is a mistake.

Was the original Casino Royale the one with George Lazenby?

I think that's right Vic.  There was one with David Niven, was that Casino Royale?

The new Bond is clearly not from a priveledged background and he makes a lot of mistakes. He is much more human, more the SAS type that joins MI6 in mid career. They've tried to do something with the franchise and I give them A for effort. Also has my fav place in the film.

how old is he supposed to be? seeing as it's supposed to be about when he first becomes a '00'

Ever heard of the 'willing suspension of disbelief'?  Every new Bond is always about 40 when they get the gig and they usually cling on till they're past their sell by date.....

It looks like he's playing a Bond in early thirties. The other Bonds were more forties I'd imagine.

......He makes mistakes from the start Vic. The girl only comes in half way through.

yes....you are supposed to see him making mistakes so you connect with him more so you are more likely to believe he can fall in love

or some other such shite. I'm only quoting the man himself

I went to see it today, and thought it was quite good.  Craig came across as a better Bond than I thought he would.  There were more twists than I was expecting in the storyline, but I did enjoy it.  I thought that Bond making mistakes at least made it believable.

I thought the lass that played the love interest was quite fit as well.

Yeah.  I know.

I'm not a massive Bond fan if I'm honest, I enjoy the films and the idea behind the series but I'm not exactly a die hard fan, I've only got 2 Bond films on DVD.  Plus I always like to see how good each new Bond is, after the first two I sort of drift out.

I can't remember the last one I went to see at the pictures before this one. I totally lost interest for a while.  However, I had to see Die Another Day, just for Halle Berry, but I only rented that out.

Am I right in thinking, that despite this being the first book, they now have very little in the way of original Fleming material for the next one? Do they start to remake them or just write new scripts?

this was the last book not made into a film
