Yohan Cabaye retires

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley will refuse to sell France playmaker Yohan Cabaye at any price.

Ashley warded off interest in several stars last summer by quoting an automatic £25million transfer fee for all of his players – including regular sub James Perch!

And he will do the same in the coming off-season with midfielder Cabaye, who is Ashley’s favourite Toon player, the man who makes the side tick and who will become skipper if Fabricio Coloccini leaves this summer.

Let's hope this is true

Douglas reporting much of the same in tomorrow's Journal:

Cabaye is central to United’s plans

NEWCASTLE United will bat back any offers for Yohan Cabaye this summer as they look to reshape their team around the France midfielder in the close season.

The Journal can reveal that Mike Ashley has already privately ruled out selling Cabaye (left), who will be named captain if Fabricio Coloccini – as expected – leaves Newcastle in the close season.

And rather than cashing in on their star assets, United have signaled their desire to rebuild after a campaign of disappointment. Preliminary plans are already in place, but the club intend to bring in more players in the Massadio Haidara mould, while also clearing the decks of more senior professionals who have been unable to nail down a place this season.

Steve Harper has already confirmed he will leave in the summer and United will make several players available to offers, with the likes of Dan Gosling set to leave in search of more first-team football. Danny Simpson will also exit the club.

The idea is to supplement the squad with more players like Haidara, who will complement the “purples” already there.

But it is news that Cabaye will be retained and given a central role in a remoulded team that will really excite supporters. Last summer, to deter potential suitors, the club quoted a blanket valuation of £25million to any tentative enquiries about any of their star names. They will do the same again this close season as they look to get back into contention for a top-six slot.

United’s finances look fairly healthy; the soon-to-be-released accounts are understood to show an operating profit even though the club brought forward the signings of Moussa Sissoko and Yoan Gouffran – and there is likely to be

investment again in the summer because of the extra TV revenue.

Newcastle will again look to the French market for recruits and are understood to be in the market for a striker, a centre-back and a wide player in the summer to bolster boss Alan Pardew’s options.

Chief scout Graham Carr was understood to be one of many Premier League talent spotters at the France under-20 game on Thursday night, with Lyon’s Samuel Utiti understood to be one player drawing interest from the Magpies. Former target Florian Thauvin also featured up front.

It is a measure of United’s ambition that Pardew, while accepting that Newcastle still have work to do this year, feels confident enough to claim the club will have a “real good go” at the league again next year.

Reflecting on a call-up for Steven Taylor which illustrates the club’s expanding crop of internationals, Pardew said it illustrates that United are “getting there”.

“We have the Dutch national goalkeeper and more players in the French national side than any other club including Paris-Saint German and whoever you want to name in France,” he told The Journal.

“We’re getting there and now, really and truly, we’re setting ourselves up for next year to have a real good go at the Premier League. This year we know we need to get safety under the belt quickly and if we can, hopefully we can cover ourselves in glory in the Europa League.”

Meanwhile, the club have confirmed that Haidara will be available for the season’s run-in. News of the left-back’s fortunate escape from any serious injury is a welcome boost with doubts surrounding the fitness of Davide Santon and Mathieu Debuchy.

“We can confirm that results of the latest scan on Massadio Haidara show that the player has very fortunately escaped any significant bone or ligament damage following the dangerous tackle by Wigan Athletic’s Callum McManaman on Sunday,” a club statement said.

“We are very pleased that the extent of his injury is less severe than first feared and is limited to bruising to the bone and soft tissue damage.

“Depending on the speed of his recovery, he should be fit to play again in early April.”

No coincidence he's playing so much better now he doesn't have to play the all-action role. Wonderful player when it's simply his job to keep the ball, occasionally win it and wait for the right pass.

Given Ben Arfa's injuries, Coloccini's issues and Cisse's form is it fair to say he's become our most important player now?

Thought we coped well without him last season - largely thanks to Guthrie being a good deputy - but he appears to be "the man" for us now.

Would still like to see him and Sissoko alternate during games a bit though, as he's proven equally adept further forward and it would allow us to be a little less predictable if nothing else. I understand we need someone to aim our goal kicks at, mind.

Completely agree with this, have never been an advocate of moving Sissoko wide or further back to accommodate Marveaux despite respecting Sylvain's talents but Sissoko and Cabaye switching it up sounds ideal as both are very different yet effective attacking players.

We would miss his harrying/tackling mind, unless Sissoko could surprise on that front. The amount of times he wins the ball back is exceptional really, when you consider he is a creative player at his core.

As i said at beginning of season when a lot were saying Tiote was more important the only way you can judge importance is when players are injured.

Last season you couldn't judge it as he was never missing but this season has shown just how important he is.

Best player is a debatable argument which can run on and on but as far as importance goes no one comes close to Cabaye for me.

Mainly because our back up/cover don't come close to offering what he does.

As for the article itself claiming players won't be sold and certain players will be added, that would be fantastic if it is the case.

Under Ashley for a while now i have ( foolishly you could argue) that i have felt that we wouldn't sell players easily and if anyone did go they would have to cost ridiculous amounts.

If Ashley is willing to back the manager with funds for the players Pardew needs and not sell our most important players then fair play to the bloke.

I also agree that Cabaye and Sissoko swapping positions from time to time would be a good idea but i don't see anything from Pardew that suggests it would happen.

Hopefully the rigidity of our business model holds up when it comes to selling as much as buying. We've had the notable exceptions (Carroll going for massive money and us buying a few in January to avoid relegation). If the club are as stubborn when it comes to selling as they are when it comes to buying, we'll be alright.

I think all the evidence shows that is the case, top dollar or piss off appears to be the motto.

I can imagine Ashley, pie in hand, whistling "don't sell cabaye"... bits of pie flying all over the place.
