Football Manager: Where are they now?

Everyone has that buy in FM that completely rejuvenated their squad. The problem with FM is that a lot of the guys that end up being brilliant almost never get there in real life. Who were some of your most memorable purchases, and how did their game form match up with their subsequent real life form?

I don't know why I just thought of this guy, but Fernando Cavenaghi was my fucking man back in FM...07, I think. Maybe 06?

Seems he went to Bordeaux, scored loads of goals and now spends his time out on loan.

Niko Mihaylov never played for Newcastle in real life. In the real world, he went from Liverpool to Twente, and is apparently the Bulgarian No. 1.

Henri Saivet is still only 20, but he's on loan in Ligue 2. He was a damn beast. 3 career goals, all in the second division. :undecided:

Sherman Andres Cardenas - Colombian attacking midfielder available for free on 06 at the tender age of 16 and was easily a top-level PL player by about 18. Used to get him in every time from Bucaramanga.

Currently plays for local side La Equidad and has scored 14 in ~140 over his career. :(

Tonton Zola Moukoko

Cherno Samba

Serge Makofo

Sure you could get all of them around the same time and all of them would be shit hot at any level. You could buy the lot for about £2m at most and play them against Real Madrid Galaticos and they'd take them apart. Great stuff

Marko Ciurlizza, walked into any midfield and dominated between FMs 06 and 09. Played pretty much his entire career for Peruvian side Alianza Lima in reality.

Not entirely related but if I was to make a team consisting of players that I´ve bought most often and have what fondest memories of in the CM/FM series it would look something like this:

          Prospar   Tsigalko

                 A. Bak

       Veloso  M. Kerr  S. Davies

Lizarazu  Djetou  T. West M. Burchill

                 Costanzo

subs: Pizzi, Sigþórsson, Bruggink, Guardado, Esnaider

edit: + Matias Fernandez, can´t leave him out. Been buying him for years.

M. Kerr was a beast.

Bit boring to just post the usuals that always turned out to be superstars, so I'll post an unkown that starred for me.

In FM08 I took Blyth to the Premier league and Emil Salomonsson was a proper story for me. Got him dead cheap when I was in League One or Two. Had a deep squad so I kind of forgot about him for a while, only getting the odd game. Had an injury crisis at the end of the League One season so brought him into the squad where he did okay and I ended up keeping him around. Then in the Championship he became a solid player but not a real star for me. Then in the first season in the Premiership he absolutely exploded. Was top scorer in the Prem from attacking midfield taking player of the season awards, before going off to the World Cup with Sweden scoring a goal in the final and winning penalty in the shootout   Absolute legend was "The Salmon"

Only just looked him up now, apparently he plays fullback these days :dontknow: and has just recently picked up a full national team cap. Gutted when I lost that FM game like, computer broke so I lost the file :( Managed to find some screens on my photobucket like, although none of any of the players:

The only other properly long term game I've had was the San Marino one I did. Biggest legend I had on there was a player called 'Mascio' who was a common buy on that game but I think ended up turning out to be a fake player. Italian-Brazilian central midfield playmaker, available from Cisco Roma at the start of the game for like 45k and was a fucking animal from set-pieces. Came in, captained us all the way through the lower divisions to the very top of the Italian game before taking up San Marinese citizenship and becoming a captain and legend for the national team too.

Here is him as a Fresh faced 17 year old in 2009 after playing out his first season with the club:

Here is him as a veteran 33 year old in 2024 after seeing and doing everything:

Crowning moment of his career:

(went on to win the Euros too)

The other goalscorer 'Nicao' from that final was a bit of a legend too, think that one actually exists:

Both of them were absolute beasts internationally, amazing goalscoring records from midfield.

So yeah, that's a little indulgence into recent FM nostalgia   Will try and think of a few more from older games.

This is retro but does anyone remember Enrique Esterbarantz?

Michael Yourrasowksi? (sp)

Mark Kerr, yes! Falkirk? Fucking hell, memories.

No, but you reminded me of Estaban the goalie, aka safe fuking hands.
