They are to a man, gutless. Despite the shambolic descent into chaos that this summer has become, there is still not a word questioning the running of the club. Tonights Chronicle sees a square bat being played with a glib interview with John Carver and a piece on Shane Ferguson hoping to be fit for Arsenal.

Our local papers could if they wanted to, drum up a bit of anger against the current heirarchy but instead they choose to protect their sources with a series of bland pieces and piling blame on anyone but the club.

If a local paper that is already struggling to stay in business no longer gets any NUFC news, then a large proportion of its readership will stop buying the paper and they'll have to shut it down. If NUFC don't have the local press, they'll carry on running business as usual. They'll just find another source to say what they want to say.

Thank god they've got a bit more intelligence than the average fan.

What? If they weren't so scared of being banned from the club, thus rendering their back pages pointless and cutting their readership in half, they'd probably be as critical as the rest of us.

They literally can't afford to fall out of favour.

Exactly.

Back in the mid 90's i knew a lad who worked for the Sunday Sun (he's now freelance and does stuff for The Mail and The People) and even then they used to be treading on egg shells in fear of a ban from the club for writing something the club didn't like.

No access to plyers, manager, coaches etc means no stories and fewer papers sold. They unfortunately have to tow the part line.

I've been trying to explain this to people in person and somehow they still don't get it. It's quite obvious they are the clubs mouthpiece but they have been for years & have rarely laid the boot into any regime let alone one that will be entire newspapers on a whim!

That's where the intelligence comes into play tbh. Lee Ryder might get on people's nerves but he's a bit more far-sighted than tits like Steve Wraith.

And the Chief Reporter of the Journal/Chron or whatever came into a lecture at Uni a few months back and said that without the sport, they'd pretty much be fucked. Like 60/70% of the people buying the local papers do so for the football.

Douglas seemed quite rattled last night when I labelled the local press cowards on twitter.

I'll withdraw the comment If he has the balls to write a decent piece for Sunday.

I had a long chat with him this morning, seems he hates to be seen as the mouth piece for the club. Simply explained that most people who complained probably didn't buy the paper which of course means they can't get the cash to do large stories on the club because as has been said they can't afford to lose them. He said he does try to cover both sides of the story and when I mentioned something on the board would be a good enough start he said hed maybe look at something for the weekend.

Also said it was difficult to do stuff investigating stuff like the clubs finances because they don't have the staff to do such a big job as they have to cover other sports not just football or even one particular club like the nationals can.

But as has been said Colocho without their sources in the club the Chronicle is no more.

I remember The Journal being a decent read, but The Chronicle is a right-wing 70's style propaganda rag.

Do the owners not realise that yes, chavs will buy their shite, but ordinary intelligent people have stopped buying tabloids because of their downward descent into the gutter.

That's the reason I never buy Barcelona press. They feed on Barça and will never stop :fwap: at everything we do, lest they risk angering the board or staff, which makes for poor readership if you're actually interested in football. These parochial newspapers that rely big on readers from a single area or supporters of a certain club won't take risks to lose the source of their content.

However, on the other side Marca tries way too hard to influence Real Madrid's decision-making.

May find out they're being very short sighted.  When Ashley's no longer here the people who called him up on his mistakes will not be banned from the club and they'll also have their credibility.  The short-sighted approach is "If I write something painfully truthful today, I might be banned from the press conference tomorrow."

Read the rest of this thread, no club access no story, no story no readers, no readers no paper.
