Former Somerset county cricketer and Australian cricket Journalist Peter Roebuck has been found dead in a hotel room in Cape Town.

 

 

The acclaimed cricket writer Peter Roebuck has been found dead at a hotel in Cape Town, South Africa.

 

Roebuck, a writer for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, was 55.

 

He played for the English county Somerset, made a home in Australia, and built a reputation as the best columnist on the sport.

Very sad news, this. Certainly the best radio commentator in Australia, and (IMO) one of the top two or three print journalists on the sport.

 

Some "circumstances" around his death- police had been questioning Roebuck earlier in the day.

I remember Roebuck as a solid opener for Somerset, then he became captain and they let Viv Richards and Joel Garner leave . As a protest Ian Botham also left and Somerset's finest ever side had gone. Botham never forgave Roebuck for his part in the proceedings.

In fairness to PR, according to wikipedia Somerset finished bottom and second bottom in the previous two years of the County champs.

 

As for the questioning by police, they claim it was in reference to sexual assault allegations. At least one of the coppers was in the room when he jumped.
