Completely farcical offside rule

For those who missed it yesterday:

A through ball is played to Aguero who is 40 yards away from goal and 15 yards offside. Everyone in the ground knows it is offside.

Aguero hasn't touched the ball, he hesitates at first but continues because he hasn't heard the whistle and chases the ball.

Our defence had stopped assuming offside and Aguero is now a long way ahead.

Yaya Toure runs through our defence and towards the ball and nearly catches Aguero. He is onside.

Aguero touches the ball, linesman sticks up his flag. If he had noticed Toure and left it for him it would have been the two of them versus Krul.

Completely farcical.

The rule is pretty straight forward tbh.  Our players should have played to the whistle.

This. Linesman could have got it wrong, Aguero could have been onside (I know, he clearly wasn't) despite everyone thinking he was offside. Always a risk to stop playing before the whistle has gone.

This. Toure should have given him a big shout and we should have been 3-0 down a bit earlier.

Well, I don't have a problem with what the rule itself aims to achieve. Say Aguero did not touch the ball and Toure came storming in and had a chance at goal, it's fair do's as Toure made the effort to get on the end of a ball, starting from an onside position.

What I do have a problem with is say Toure did get to the ball, Aguero should then not be involved in play until he was behind the defence again (back in an onside position), as he had gained an advantage being there starting from an offside position. The offside player should be completely neutralized and not allowed to take part in the attack until they have gone back into an onside position. One solution is for the player to plop down on their ass and hold their hand up while play continues

The flag should have went up immediately as Aguero was jogging towards the ball in the first place and clearly active.

Clearest offside ever as well. I don't blame our players for stopping, if it had ever been allowed then it would have been the worst decision of all time

As others have said about our defence, as obvious as it may have looked, play to the whistle. But it's a joke to claim that just because aguero didn't touch it, he's inactive. The definition of active and inactive in these rules appears to be a joke. No matter whether aguero touched the ball before toure, it was clear as day he was influencing the move.

Going off thread I know, but what was the blackburn corner all about?

Pedersen took a corner to himself and crossed the ball in and Blackburn scored.

It looked at first like Yakubu had put the ball down and brushed it into play before Pedersen came and got it and crossed it in, but he hadn't even touched. The ref turned his back to the action as well so just assumed it had taken place.

FFS isnt the assistant meant to watch the taker so its inside the quadrant etc?

It was the unmanned corner.

What, so for the sake of about 1.5 seconds (if that) he made a poor decision? Talk about overcritical.

Aguero was the one offside. He was correctly given offside. Not sure what the linesman did wrong at all tbh.

It did look like he was going to let play go on if Toure had picked it up instead though.

But that would have been okay, going by the current mental rules. Toure wasn't offside. The only person who fucked up was Aguero.

Depends what you define as 'active'. Aguero was jogging towards the ball the entire time.

Isn't that the point James was making? ???

The rule is farcical if it deems Aguero wasn't active - the defence have stopped because the player who the ball has gone to is miles offside - by definition, that makes him offside and active imo.
