Is racist abuse still an issue in North East football?

I have to say, that I find that people from india have a poor sense of humour.  Mind maybe the british humour is bit differnt form alot of other peoples. or maybe i just met all the boring indians.  I dont mean asians raised in uk, I mean ones from india.

Most africans ive met have been very funny people.

There are over a billion of us so you probably have met only "the boring ones." It's a very expansive statement to make, anyway, as you're not taking into account what you consider funny and what culturally may not transfer over well to any other culture different from yours. I've grown up in both India and Africa, and met hilarious people in both those places, including England. Humour, like everything, is subjective to the person.

Fantastic assessment.

Yes it is.

I've just got season tickets in the East Stand and there's a couple of guys behind me (about 3 or 4 rows back) who were fucking disgraceful the way they were talking about Wright-Phillips at the weekend.

May report them if they do it again, and I can do it discreetly.

You can do it via text now during the game, not sure on the number etc.

I still remember my first away game. Wolves away (03/04) a 1-1 draw when that lass got hit by the firework & on the coach on the way down some of the lads we're singing racist & Pro NF songs. As a mixed race 17 year old I was terrified & my mates we're so embarrassed they couldn't apologise enough. The faces of the lads in question we're a picture as they walked down the bus, saw me & promptly realised they were in the wrong. Gladly that's my only experience of racism in 15 years of following NUFC.

This is true. I can personally testify to this.

I can remember being in the Milburn Paddock in the early 90's when it was still a terrace. Some bloke started shouting that one of the opposition players was "a black c*nt". Few people told him to shut the fuck up and pointed out that Andy Cole was also black. Racist bloke goes "he's not black, he plays for the Toon". What a fucking moron.

Bloody hell, man.

Racism has assumed a strange role in our society. Whilst a more severe tact was required to tackle it, due to the severity of the abuse, both physical and mental. We have now arrived a place where racism is apparently worse than xenophobia.

And then racists start to call other people "racists".

Varying levels of political correctness have blurred the lines too and probably pushed some people towards what would be considered racist.

I would say racism is more prevalent and indeed vicious in many other parts of the world than it is in the UK.

On a global scale we're not bad, but at the same time shouldn't be complacent.

Multi cultural society has improved Britain and the west end of Newcastle is a great example.

Anyway this thread is getting a lot broader than it was probably intended originally, but I'm happy to say again I haven't heard any racist abuse inside SJP for years if not decades.

I wouldn't agree with that. Their is a large amount of minority groups in the West End, (mainly West gate road) however from my view they tend to stay in their own circles, often not mixing with other groups. In fact I would say it's a good example of not integrating well. One of the main causes of racism is the lack of integration. I'm not just saying it's all on one side, white people also have to make an effort to integrate with other cultures. Too many people and too many youths have an attitude that white people shouldn't mingle with ethnic minorities. That is an appalling pint of view in my opinion.

I have to say though that since when I was little to now I see less and less racism. Maybe it's because I'm not around the sort of people who held those views or maybe racism is on the decline, but from what I can see is that over the years the problem is starting to be solved.

Like I said though, maybe I'm wrong, maybe I just don't hear of it anymore because I'm old enough to choose who I socialise with and I choose not to socialise with people who have those views.

Who exactly has this view?

Oh and I actually agree with Benwell Lad about the west end of Newcastle being a good example of multi cultural society. Trust me I was born and bred in this area so I am well aware of it, is it perfect? Nope, far from it BUT a quick visit to places like Bradford and some of the towns in the North West and you appreciate just how good it is here.

I think you are making the mistake of assuming because majority of the Asians in Newcastle live in the west end therefore they are not integrating, that imo is false.

Back on the football issue, I personally can't recall any incidents of racist abuse BUT have heard about it from others so no doubt it exists, though fortunately it does appear to be rare and in an extreme minority

The psychology of racism is pretty straight forward.

It tends to occur amongst a certain socio-economic class. Basically, the people who have fuck all to be proud of look for ways in which they can consider themselves to be better than someone else.

This is why you get thick-as-pig-shit chavs spouting off about darkies and gays. Gives them someone to look down on, even if it's for bullshit reasons. It allows them to not feel like the bottom rung of the ladder.

So with the economic downturn, we're probably going to see more of that mindset.

Basically, it's the fault of the Tories.

i honestly can't tell if you're trolling again or not, congratulations you' ve morphed into Stu circa 2009-2010

Still a problem, but as Gordon Strachan was saying a couple of weeks ago you take a moron to a football game he's still a moron, he's a moron in the stadium, he's a moron at home. Stick tens of thousands of people in a stadium and chances are some of them will be wankers. Still a problem, but I'm not entirely sure how it can be removed.

I feel a bit dirty for agreeing with Strachan.

strongly disagree, maybe the form it takes is less obvious but it crosses the class barrier unfortunatly well. racism has more to it than shouting in the street or at a football ground.

I certainly think that casual racism seems to be on the rise personally but then i think the level of casual insults in general has risen ten fold over the last ten years.  The casual insults that people (including myself) throw around today knows no bounds IMO.

Society seems to have accepted a deeper, darker form of abuse.  The kind of "jokes" that the likes of Frankie Boyle lowers himself to is unbelievable at times and i think thats part of the problem.  He says it as a joke and people find it funny but cant separate what can be said at an event which you pay to attend and normal run of the mill life.

I remember a few years ago when we played Middlesbrough at SJP and the Boro fans were making monkey noises at Martins.......their star striker being Yakubu at the time, don't get me wrong, all clubs have the racist minority but from my time spent in and around Middlesbrough they are by far the most racist town i've had the pleasure of being around.

Spot on madras, Luca sounds like a working class hating middle class student, all that education and he knows nothing of Imperialism and the British ruiling class (for a subject close to home).

Nothing like attacking an easy target is there Luca?

There seems to be a couple of EDL appologists/sympathisers on this thread, not sure if you lads are aware of where the EDL grew out of? here's a link to an old documentary about a couple of ex-BNP members that should give you an idea, the EDL may have tried to drop all the Hitler and nazi stuff, but the inevitable social ghettos and contradictions that being a part of such groups create, remains the same.

Back then it was BNP member David Copeland who murdered 3 and injured over 100 with a nail bomb, today we have EDL sympaphiser Anders Breivik executing over 70 defenceless kids.

The ironic swap of the swastika for the star of david means fuck all.

As a man who has obviously had to face a lot of homophobic abuse throughout life, Colocho, does it hurt/offend you in any way that homophobia is seamingly seen as lesser 'crime', and in reflection to this receives far less nationwide support in comparison to racism, and indeed other forms of cultural hatred?

To be honest, racism is always going to more of an issue in economically deprived areas such as the North East.

With all due respect, we weren't the ones ripping our city's to bits and looting our friends and neighbours shops were we?  If the economic downturn has increased racism in the North then it's increased cuntishness in the south ten fold you fucking Neanderthal.

Twaddle.

Most notable racist incident of the month was by a southern based, rich, fat female Labour MP.
