(Franchise discussion thread so SPOILERS WILL HAPPEN)

This has to be one of my favourite movie franchises alongside Die Hard. Each film, for the most part, works well as a standalone movie.

Alien - Horror Movie

Aliens - Action Movie

Alien3 - 'Art' Movie

Alien Resurrection - Trendy Pop Culture Movie

I know I'm not the only fan of the franchise out there. Tooj seems a big fan of the whole Alien Mythos and adamantly defends Prometheus!

I'm always hoping that one day they'll be more, however I'm pretty sure Ripley's story is over. There's not much more they can do with her story after the events of Alien3 and Alien Resurrection. I've always been amazed that the Extended Universe (EU) is so shallow for the Alien Franchise. You have a few comics before they stretch into Alien v Predator, and a handful of novels. There's so much scope for a great EU, yet there doesn't seem to be any attention in it. I've included the Predator and Alien v Predator movies in with the Alien Franchise as the two are so closely linked these days (rightly or wrongly).

I know it's an old franchise that has been drawn out for several decades, but there's so much to discuss:

- Favourite characters

- Favourite scenes

- Favourite Movie

- Is Alien3 a misunderstood Masterpiece?

- The evolution of the franchise through Prometheus

- Where would you take the EU?

- Is Predator part of Alien Canon now?

Is that based purely on the movies or from the Dark Horse comics too?

Movies, man.  Comics have nothing to do with the Alien universe, nor do the Predator movies.  Alien was created by Giger, Shussett and Bannon, the AvP was an attempt by big network exec's to cash in on nostalgia and intrigue.  Should be ignored. :snod:

Never really understood the Alien egg they used for the original Alien film poster. It looks nothing like a face hugger egg, more like a bog standard hen's.

Still can't say how disappointed I was with Prometheus.

The first Predator is good, but after that the franchise hasn't been looked after very well. Predators seemed to be a kick start, but it's such an average film (if not boring). Yet, I can't help but think of Alien & Predator together. The comics are worth read as their stories are pretty good (if comics are your thing), which makes the movies even more frustrating.

I think the general feeling is AvP happens in it's own little world and no longer impacts on Alien Canon (given the events of Prometheus seemingly rewriting Weyland's history).

Fucking hell, there's a fucking "Aliens vs. Predator vs. The Terminator" comic, enough said.

Yeah, some of those are silly. There's a Batman one too.

Holding out for the Director's Cut to fill in some of the gaps that just seemed odd. Like the 'missing time' between the attempted Freezing then Shaw seemingly being best mates with everyone again. I'd watch it again, but just felt... indifferent. I think the digital format made it look too clean and 'safe' too, but that's just a pet hate of mine in general.

Some of the deleted scenes look fucking excellent as well. :hmm:

Yeah, be interesting to see how they fit in.

I don't hate the movie, or really dislike it, I'll watch it again without a doubt. I think the only issue I had was that it suffered heavily from Damon Lindelof's 'trademark' pile of questions and tangents with no answers writing style. That's great for conversation and debate, but offers the viewer no 'reward' for the time they've spent watching the movie. Personally, I'm not a fan of Damon Lindelof and I'm becoming increasingly tired of him and other 'LOST' alumni being tied in with so many movie and TV projects.

What I've always liked about the Alien Franchise is how strong the ensemble characters are. That first time you watch Alien you have no idea who the lead is really, so everyone feels vulnerable when things start kicking off. Aliens has a great cast and characters too. Alien3 has strong support cast. Alien Resurrection not as much. But Prometheus seems very basic when it comes to building up the supporting cast (which is a criticism I have for LOST too), they basically have a 'gimmick' and that's it.

I mean the Biologist that seemingly forgets he's a Biologist. He went from pissing his pants at holographic images, to wanting to kiss that Snake looking alien worm...

The characters in Prometheus were very thinly sketched and I didn't care for them at all. When things went bad, they were just waiting to be killed. Even the lead female character i wasnt fully invested in.The same cant be said about Lost's characters all of whom were fleshed out given the benefit of it being a tv show as opposed to a rather rushed film.

Prometheus want the worst film I've seen this year but it was by some distance the most disappointing.

Agree with this. Had so high expectations for Prometheus, but it failed to deliver.

Just watched prometheus again, good film.  This is the third time Ive watched it and it seems better again.  I do accept it has a few niggles.

Ill accept it as the first act of a 3 act play, the second will be very interesting if Dr Shaw finds the home planet.  I suspect the engineers are the workers and may have been trying to creat a weapon that would over throw the master/lord/god.

I think this GOD who is pulling the strings is an utter evil bastard.

Yeah, I'm interested to see where it all goes and that in part is probably due to the lack of answers provided by the first Prometheus film. I still, however, cannot understand why Shaw suddenly 'teams up' with David after he essentially tried to freeze her to take back home to the company (shades of Burke in Aliens). Really hope there's a deleted scene that covers the time between the freezing and Shaw being friendly with people again.

The whole Black DNA thing is interesting too. It was always said that the Xenomorphs took on properties of it's host, so it was nice to see that play a part with the Black DNA stuff.

I dont think she has a choice, she needs david and david needs her or they are both stuck on that moon.

At the end I think David respects her due to her boldness.

Im looking forward to seeing who this ultimate creator is.

Yeah but Lost had 6 series and 100+ hours to invest in, to be fair.

Prometheus is roughly a couple of hours. (I haven't seen Prometheus yet)

Plus about 24 mins ripped out to suit FOX's time frame.
