If this diverting valuable time away from other discussions, this is a complete joke.

Yes, we need depth - but this is not the time to focus on that.

We don't show busting a gut for anything though do we?

If Santon got crocked we would be in the same position as we currently are at centre back, ie players who are good for the odd game but not good enough to play half a season there.

We should be showing signs of busting a gut to get a  'williamson 'inhibitor' twice over above all else in my opinion. This lad for depth would be a bonus not a priority.

and how do we show that ? announce to the press officially who we've bid for, how much for the transfer and wages ?

If we don't end January with a CB it's indefensible, whether we 'appear to be trying' to get one now is irrelevant.

 this deal with have no bearing on our other transfers imo and we do need another full back.

Now of course I expect this news on here will come down with a lot of cynicism and people will moan about him not being a centre half or forward that will come straight into the first team. Yet to me we are still in need of some squad depth as if Santon gets injured we haven't got anybody that is ready to step in. I'm not including Ferguson in this as he has clearly show he is not ready to be a first team regular and needs to go out on loan . Plus prior to Norwich Santon was having arguably his worst spell in a Newcastle shirt so the competition for his place is another benefit of this signing.

Likewise if Debuchy gets injured or suspended it means we can use Santon at right-back.

It's definitely good news.

Indeed, good post 2J.

Totally agree with both of you.

Have you seen much of him QBG? What kind of player is he, i.e. solid defensively, or better going forward?

Seen a fair bit of him, would probably compare him to Lillian Thuram but at LB. He's tall, physical and solid defensively. Does get forward but could probably improve that side of his game. If he develops as he has done so far he will become a top player.

Seems to need re-stating every day. We do not comment on potential transfers.

The only stuff we hear is media speculation, a player or players agent drumming up further interest, or the selling club breaking the silence (again primarily to smoke out other potentially interested parties).

For anyone to base any solid opinion on what we're up to or how hard we're working behind the scenes on what spills out into the public domain is wanton idiocy.

Exactly.

True fact: we're going into the second of three crucial matches without signing a centre half.

Couldn't give a fuck what they're trying to do, unless the player comes through the door we receive no benefit.
