TheHoob
Didn't they raise the initial money on kickstarter? O Neill
Didn't they raise the initial money on kickstarter? Get other people to invest the original however many million then sell it for 2 billion, not really surprised some people are pissed to be fair Not sure why. Isn't that the idea of Kickstarter? Surely when pledging money, nobody is under the impression that someone is creating a product with the intention of it not being successful? I love the look of this but I'm guessing it's one of those things that you can never tell just how good it is until you try it for yourself. I'm just curious as to what Facebook want to do with it outside of the games industry. Obviously at the buy-in price they must have some sort of blueprint on how they are going to move forward whether it be as some sort of training tool or for medical/health purposes etc. It's definitely an interesting purchase though as I would have thought augmented reality such as the Google glass would have been a much more attractive route for them to go down as opposed to virtual reality. BlueStar
I'm just curious as to what Facebook want to do with it outside of the games industry. Don't think they have a clue to be honest, they're just chucking money about. "Hm, people are starting to think Facebook isn't cool. Let's buy things that are cool." Willow
Sony's project Morpheus GDC 2014 Presentation in full things will be hotting up in the next year or so, it's quite exciting. The potential really is almost limitless when it comes to VR. I can imagine 360 degree cameras being set up in venues, such as gigs, museums or even st james park! For example, you could pay a price, hook up your headset and have the game streamed to your headset at home hopefully not from iraqgoals like As for gigs, maybe devs could work out how to attend an old beatles or 2pac concert and you'd feel like you were right there. Aye, I'm getting carried away but these things happening are only a matter of time, it all depends how fast devs get a grip on the new technology, as creating for a new medium is probably pretty daunting. Peppe
f***ing Facebook Why are you bothered? If anything facebook buying it will help it become better and cheaper I'm not sure, it was just my first reaction. Kinda feels like they buy everything that gets popular and that got me annoyed. Not really sure why though You're probably right, they've got gazillions of dollars so it will probably get better and maybe be developed faster aswell. Coco
It's a kick in the balls for the Kickstarter backers. This should make people realise that when you "back" something on Kickstarter, you're not an investor, you don't have any equity. These people helped get this project off the ground, they gave it the media spotlight that has directly resulted in it making an absolute fortune. What do they get for that? Fuck all. What little they did get (i.e. the feeling that you helped this great idea get off the ground) will be eroded by Zuckerberg and Facebook being plastered all over any future releases of the Rift. The guys at Oculus must be laughing all the way to the bank. Massive profits, and no investors or shareholders to pay off. Objectively speaking, it's a good move for Oculus. They get financial power of Facebook and it's media presence. VR may be about to move from a niche gaming idea to a much broader platform. How this will impact the gaming community is unknown. Sure, they've come out and said that 3rd party development will be unaffected, but you can't predict that at this stage. With Notch already pulling his support, others may follow suit. BlueStar
The main worry is that firstly Facebook fuck it up, lock it down and try to control content, while simultaneously using the patents they've obtained through the sale to prevent anyone making genuine competitors. Bet Vale are regretting giving Oculous all hat VR tech for free as well.
LV
Really want one of these (even if Facebook have bought them). Just wish they would hurry up and release the consumer version.

Willow
It's the non-gaming apps that I think will be fantastic in VR, here's an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFWw6hGIKmc plus porn on it will be outstanding Also, "This is more like the HD prototype, we're gunning to the consumer version, we don't have a lot of time or bandwidth to productize another development kit" http://www.polygon.com/2014/9/22/6826491/oculus-retail-teaser-prototype So it looks like no more dev kits, as the retail version is now in full development. I still think mid to late 2015 is the time we'll see it, but hopefully it won't slip to 2016. Plus, it looks like you'll need a beast of a rig if you want to experience it best on the prettiest games, but that's obvious I guess. The final demo was the showstopper: A slow-motion trip through a futuristic war zone. It wasn't interactive, but everything felt real. Uncomfortably so. I found myself dodging bullets and shrapnel, and grimacing when things exploded nearby. A car was caught in the blast and flew over me; I could look up and see someone pinned inside. The robot at the end of the demo bent down to scream in my face, and once again I pulled back, sucking air through my teeth. I would go through this demo two more times throughout the course of the day and I would explore the scene, admiring the work done on the gun models and the body armor of the soldiers, walking around and bending down close to see every detail. That first time made me feel like I was in a war myself, however, and I couldn't keep my body from reacting. Gaming is about to change, and the players willing to upgrade their systems to take full advantage are going to find themselves in a whole new world. http://cdn0.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/QNXytM_AyrEmlq30jaH75kKXQm4=/675x0/filters:no_upscale()/cdn1.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/1394428/Crescent-Bay-Front-Pers-on-Light.0.jpg also
