NUFC Fans Forum - No interest in winning cups

We haven't got a hope in hell of winning a cup with Pardew and Kinnear in charge anyway.

Both of them have got to cup finals with lesser teams. :dontknow:

When did Kinnear get to a Cup Final as a manager?

Got to both the league cup, and the FA cup finals with the Wombles iirc.

 No he didnt

We will play the unused first team players and the more interesting youth/reserve prospects, as we have done in every cup match for many, many seasons. It is not as if we are throwing out the u-18 team, most of the players will be highly paid and some internationals. If we manage to stumble our way to the quarter finals with this strategy, we will throw out the first team and treat it like the World Cup. This is the way most clubs in the Championship and above treat the League Cup. It is just the nature of things.

I think we'll have a pretty strong team out tonight. If we had a game on Saturday then it would be a different story, but we've got nearly a full week until we play again so there will probably be only a couple of youngsters chucked in.

You are correct BottledDog.

 You probably didn't even read it, man.

But it is absolute bollocks that cup competitions being lower down on our list of priorities than the league means we have no interest in winning a cup.

Is this really deserving of your outrage? Really?

It doesn't just say that, that the cup competitions are just lower down our list of priotities, it says "the cup competitions are not a priority for the club. They are used to be able to look at our squad as a whole. The focus is on a top ten league place because the financial rewards are so great"

How anyone can even try to spin that to anything other than "no interest in winning the cups" is beyond me.

Sorry, don't think they're mutually exclusive like. It's editorializing and, at best, an uncharitable interpretation.

 and that would be a fantastic argument.

People are actually defending what has been recorded though, which is fucking ludicrous.

Who is?

The thread is 4 pages long and was created a few hours ago, I'm guessing you've read it and you can come to your own conclusions of what people are doing.

Again, call it whatever you want.

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has no intention to sell up – after board members relayed the information during a fan forum this week.

A report from Newcastle United Supporters Trust indicated that a panel including secretary Lee Charnley and finance director John Irving took questions from the club’s fan forum.

In what was described as a positive step forward by NUST a statement reflected on the meeting by reporting that Ashley has: “No intention, desire or ambition to sell the club.”

The club’s blueprint remains to sign players under 26 years of age but there is still flexibility to bring in more experienced players.

The report also reveals that United did not dip into their £60million TV cash jackpot because the club felt that the extra revenue merely inflated the current market.

And this was one of the reasons why they brought forward their transfer activity to January.

As reported in the Chronicle last week, the board also confirmed that there was money put aside to spend this summer but those funds weren’t used because they were touted prices above what United felt was the valuation of the players on their shortlist.

The report indicated that director of football Joe Kinnear tried hard to bring in players but the he wasn’t always “at fault” after agent fees and “other issues” hindered the deals.

NUST’s report also says that United confirmed that cup competitions aren’t the priority for Newcastle and that the will be used to look at squad players.

Newcastle stated in the meeting that a top 10 finish is the main aim this term.

On the finance front United told fans that they were working on a three year cycle with the TV money and that there are no debts at United apart from interest-free loans to Ashley and they won’t be called in “until or if” the club is sold.

A statement from NUST also read: “The Club accounts show that Mike Ashley took an £11million short term loan back last year but the £18million short term loan he was due to take back this year is being rolled over to future years. The long term loan of £111million will stay in the accounts but there is no definition of long term. This means that our only significant debts are the interest free debts to Mike Ashley.

“On the Commercial income side we are one of the weakest clubs around. The Directors are working with Wonga and Puma to improve that situation but there was little information about what plans we have in place. Our commercial income shown in the accounts is about £13million. Man. Utd for example was shown recently as £153million! We were told that we couldn't compete with Man. Utd.;

“They were asked if Sports Direct paid for adverting at St. James' Park and it was confirmed that they do not. John Irving said that Sports Direct were using space that would be otherwise unused but didn't say how hard the commercial team were trying to find other (paying) advertisers,”

I wasn't defending it, like. Just pointing out that I doubt that we'd intentionally put ourselves out of cups. It's s****, but is it really that surprising? Every day we have posters repeating our only ambition is to remain in the league, this just confirms it. Not a great deal we can do about it.

Of course we wouldn't intentionally put ourselves out of the cups. Nobody has suggested any such thing, not even the thread title. You are doing the exact same thing as what you are combatting: grossly exagerating the ramifications of an argument to suit your own.

The lack of ambition not only manifested by their (lack of) actions, but also explicitely stated in a fan forum is not without consequence. For one, it sets the bar for accepting mediocrity from our manager: achieve midtable Premiership positions without necessarily ever looking like serious contenders for a cup and your job is safe.

It's utterly disgusting how our expectations have been systematically lowered since Ashley took over. I can't wait to see the back of him.

Since Ashley bought the club (6+ seasons) we have won a total of 11 domestic cup ties. Only 2 of those were against Premiership opposition - Blackburn the season they got relegated, and the 4-3 at Chelsea.

We went all out for that Chelsea game with a team of Krul, R.Taylor, Ferguson, Campbell, Coloccini, Smith, Vuckic, Lovenkrands, Ameobi, Gutierrez, Ranger. As we were on a cup run we put out an even better team for the next round against Arsenal - Krul, R. Taylor, Kadar, Perch, Williamson, Guthrie, Smith, Vuckic, Ranger, Routledge, Lovenkrands (only Krul & Williamson started in the preceding and following league fixtures).

Some are saying we are no different from other Premiership clubs in not prioritising the cups. Under Ashley's ownership, "concentrating on the league" seems to be one thing we excel at though.

It's about time our club and Pards realised that it is actually possible to win a cup as well as stay in the league and have a crack at Europe at the same time without players dying from exertion or a super-massive black hole spontaneously appearing over St James's Park.

I'm not sure 'excel' is exactly the word for it.

So the only things we will have a chance of winning, we use the squad, i dont see a problem with it. Why say it's not a priority though, that leaves it open to criticism. Why not say the league is the main foucs but we'll try to win a cup along the way.

PR from this club is so shit it's untrue, they cant even get that right.

So lets get this straight, winning the cup competitions are not a priority, we don't want to qualify for Europe, and we can't compete with the big clubs or even compete financially with the likes of Norwich, Swansea or Southampton.

Supporting Mike Ashley's Newcastle United is no longer a priority of mine.

f*ck him and f*ck the pair of c*nts Pardew and Kinnear.

These c*nts should all be run out of town.

What sort of a target is it to aim for a top 10 position? Obviously we can't compete with the Manchester clubs or those in the CL, but that's only around 5 clubs. Of the rest, we are in a position to be competing for the no 6 position in the league and European qualification which seems to annoy our manager so much. What the fuck is the point of aiming for the top 10?
