Lee Charnley

I just can't believe that (although he sounds it) Mike Ashley is as thick as he comes across by some of his appointments. I really don't see how hard it can be to be aware of the obvious faults at this club, or in fact how easy it would be to get things running smoothly. Why does he insist on surrounding himself with incompetent staff who clearly have less of an idea about how things work in the footballing world than he does? It's not rocket science that you would employ a general manager/chairman with previous experience of running a football club or at least knowing how it's done effectively. Charnley in fact has a testicle for a head, all in all he is just a walking bollock with zero ability in a sporting environment and even less where football in concerned. You'd think Ashley would have learnt from the shit-storm that Llambias created or the wank mess that 'Boggle-eyes' Wise was involved in.

It is understood no appointment is imminent, with Lee Charnley, the managing director, being prepared to wait a few weeks to secure the right man. The plan is to have him installed by the time the players return to pre-season training in early July. Along the way Charnley is expected to reconsider the credentials of John Carver, the interim head coach, as well as those of McClaren, Garde and Laudrup.

Yeah, no rush pal.

"In a rare interview last Sunday Ashley pledged to invest heavily in new players next season"

I may have to listen to it again but I don't think he pledged any of the sort, did he?

No, I think his wording was he will continue his policy of investment... which to my mind means he'll be putting in bugger all and selling anything that he thinks will make him a profit.  :hmm:

I think it is also the section where he admits we may need some luck today (last Sunday) but that we won't be in this position again. I think an admission that the quality of the squad, and hopefully the coaches, isn't right.

I wonder if the new ambition of the owner has caught Charnley on the hop and maybe he has to find a bigger budget for the new coach than he originally planned.

Apologies for the optimism in the comments, I do think it will be McClaren but the problem with the summer months is that small ray of hope that usually lasts until 1st September.

Nice one Lee! Great to see you've been busy since the end of December!

Mike Ashley has handed full responsibility to managing director Lee Charnley and Newcastle United’s “football board” ahead of what many at the club feel will be the busiest summer of the Toon tycoon’s ownership.

The process to decide who will be the next head coach and confirm the list of summer transfer targets is expected to get under way today, with Charnley meeting up with board members to thrash out a plan of action.

It is understood that Ashley wants a “hands-off” role when it comes to making football decisions, but the owner spoke to Charnley and John Carver about his relief after the 2-0 win over West Ham.

Newcastle will lose one board member – financial guru John Irving – in the near future.

And it remains to be seen whether they add to the “football board”, which Ashley spoke about in public on Sunday, by bringing in a football consultant-style director in due course.

That was Ashley’s course of action the last time United came close to relegation in 2013.

However, the ill-fated decision to bring back Joe Kinnear backfired when the ex-Wimbledon boss failed to clinch a single permanent signing – despite making a huge sales pitch to Ashley that he would be able to reshape the club’s football operations from top to bottom.

For now, Charnley will continue to work with chief scout Graham Carr and head coach John Carver as the club look to make better decisions than in seasons gone by.

Carver will go away on holiday soon but has so far been in charge of structuring pre-season dates and friendly options, which will begin in mid-July.

Players are expected back for pre-season training on July 1 but those involved with international matches in mid-June will be afforded extra holiday to get the required rest period in before the new season starts.

Meanwhile, it is believed that there is continued interest from Crystal Palace in Newcastle goalkeeper coach Andy Woodman.

Alan Pardew has always taken Woodman with him during his career, but the former Palace keeper opted to stay on Tyneside in January.

"Lee Charnley to draw up head coach shortlist after being handed full control of search"

Shortlist, that's a canny idea. Wonder how long it took him to come up with that one.

Pretty sure they said the same thing when Pardew left

Gonna be a very shortlist I imagine. Probably currently reads

1. John

2.

pick up milk

pick up mike's dry cleaning

Finally some work Charnley is eminently suitable for.

Wasn't there a quote from Charnley a while back where he said that all the work had been done so if it did wait until the summer it wouldn't be a long process?

I guess that was before John managed a one game unbeaten run, but still...

It's simple Ashley surrounds himself with YES men and that's why they are incompetent atseholes. Because anyone with any ounce of savvy would challenge him and throw up arguments. Mike doesn't like this do takes easy option, the fat cunt

It's same in any business though employ YES men and they are usually so out of their depth it's unreal , they just adopt and do as they are told with no fuss

Charnley has went from club secretary to chief exec how the fuck has that happened, in no other structure would you have such a leap up the ladder

He's so blatantly a mouthpiece and arse licker...and we all know Mike just loves to be loved. The fat kid wth no mates bullied in the playground coming out

Trouble is some of those on the list have gone and got themselves jobs.  Goodness knows why they didn't want to wait for another few months before Carver gets appointed permanently.

I thought the shortlist they made in January meant they didn't need to make another one???

They'll make as many shortlists as it takes to get to the start of Aug without anyone coming in. :)

Had 80 names on it that, Man. Have to pare it down a bit.

78 were from me and my various aliases. ;)

Rick Van Bender got an immediately reply.

Did they manage to interview all 80 on the list then? That must have been a busy Monday morning.
