Elite: Dangerous

I think there is some kind of free Elite remake out there. Forget what it's called though.

This is £50 at the moment for early access but it's worth it for me because I was obsessed with Elite as a kid.

So far this game is alot like my marriage, Cold, Dark, f***ing Scary, Lot's of Confrontation and I only end up talking and playing with myself.

Haven't had a chance to play it since the full release. How is it looking?

I've been doing the tutorials, currently stuck on Supply Strike. My wingmen seem to do fuck all. I managed to take out two escorts but then couldn't find the bigone to take out. Borrowed my dads Thrustmaster Joystick to play this so far.

Managed to finally play a bit of this. Sadly both my ancient joystick and the X-box controller both feel completely inadequate for playing. Decided to upgrade to a HOTAS system which arrived earlier in the week. Is anyone else playing with one? Kind of hoping the learning curve isn't too rough otherwise I'll be spending the next week crashing into every object in space.

A console version is incoming with a period of X-Box: One exclusivity.

Not entirely sure this is a great game for consoles though and I'll be very intrigued to see how it is received both critically and by players. In my opinion the game is tough to play on PC with an X-box controller as there are so many commands you want at the flick of a switch. There just aren't enough buttons on the pad for that but maybe they'll find a mapping that works.

On top of that Elite isn't your typical console game. It is essentially a big lethal sandbox that offers little in the way of direction. The game doesn't hit you with tutorials or help guides. It offers you the full galaxy from the word go with no indicators to show that a job is way beyond the capabilities of your ship etc. Put simply, it's ruthless. Will be interesting to see what kind of interest this gets from console players. I imagine it will be a very small number.

Is currently on Steam sale and very nearly clicked "buy" - then checked out some reviews on Metacritic. Now I'm torn - a lot of the negative reviews seem to be from old skool Elite players (i.e. my peers!)

If I loved Elite on the Commodore 64, am I going to enjoy Elite Dangerous?
