If he was a few years older I’d get him settling for a bench role but he should be in his prime, he should want a move away for that reason alone.

Why would he do that? He’s the club captain of the best club on the planet and will see plenty of minutes this season during our deep cup runs (and maybe even in the league).

He will get minutes for sure, but he’s not first choice anymore, he knows it, we know it.

It’s about self respect, yes this is probably the biggest club he’ll ever play for but the version of it that he led was a shadow of what it’s quickly becoming. The version he led was no better than Norwich or Forest or Burnley. He’s the one who came on the radio to defend Mike Ashley.. “he’s a good guy”.. remember that?

As we grow into what we should have been all along we’re quickly seeing who’s out of their depth. Some players will improve and become more, but it won’t be Lascelles.

Can he do a job coming off the bench?, yeah sure.. but he could be captaining and starting for one of those lower down sides. The fact he seems content to settle for a bit part role is an indication that he’s accepted defeat already in terms of his career here.

Way to completely generalize the Captain of the club who’s seemingly been first class on and off the pitch in football and out of football, esp in the community. If he wants to play a squad role, he’s a settled family in the North East and is fine being part of the project, not kicking up a fuss - who are we to judge if he should be playing for a lower league side or not?

I agree and I am happy to leave that decision up to Howe and Lascelles himself.

Your wrong kanji, he absolutely must go now. His comments about Ashley being a good guy was the final straw. (Never mind the fact he was referencing his own dealings with Ashley at the time and nothing else). /s

Totally understand the sentiment. I completely checked out from all things  NUFC due to that regime (at two points: when they got rid of Keegan—crept back into me during relegation season—then when they engineered Rafa’s exit). Thing is as club captain and seeing the toxic impact on the squad/everything NUFC of what was going on, trying to be facilitative/ambassadorial is understandable. Think you should give the lad a pass for those comments now. He’s earned it.

Apparently Lascelles makes a big contribution in the changing room helping with togetherness and moral etc

Well if he loves being here, and is proud to pull on the shirt, it will help with that. Anyone who's been a part of team sport knows the importance of a genuine leader. Would make more sense to move on the likes of Fede and Clark.

I'm all for having characters in the dressing room but seems a bit excessive having him, Shelvey, Dummett, etc when we're struggling to whittle down to a 25 man squad. Shelvey and Lascelles could do a job as squad players for another season but anything beyond that is pointless. Some people worried when we lost Barton & Nolan and we had our best season in ages.

But we do probably need the option of four CBs so I could understand if Howe thought he could be one of them. Obviously not first team though.

His distribution wasn't great but he looked like Franz Beckenbauer compared to the lad stood to his left.

He battled hard and got a lot better after he scored, it seemed to give him a lift. Still don't want to see much of him this season, he doesn't inspire confidence.

He's really good at attacking the ball on corners. He must have scored at least one goal every season he's been here from set pieces? Last two goals helped us come back from a goal behind as well.

I thought of all the players on the fringes of the starting XI - he looked the best.

Longstaff, Dummett in particular looked a long way off. If they had to play 5 games back-to-back we would be significantly weaken
