Jonjo Shelvey (now playing for Çaykur Rizespor, on loan from Nottingham Forest)

Looked so good today man. Shocked at how well he closed down and also won the ball.

Might just be that Howe is the type of manager that gets through to him, if so that would be great, because he can add a lot to the team. Let down by his midfield partner today really, as Willock was poor in that central midfield role.

It was interesting watching match of the day and seeing them highlight in the Chelsea game how Jorginho sat deeper and pinged balls about, while Kante got further forward and tried to create overloads higher up the pitch, in their 3-4-3. We seemed to try to mimick that partnership a bit with Jonjo deep and Willock getting forward, but Willock just didn't do enough at all.

Will inevitably revert to type soon and leave people feeling like dickheads for allowing themselves to forget what an absolute waste of space clown he is.

If he does, he'll be dropped like a brick. Howe won't tolerate that, I think we've seen that much.

Interesting that that he was the one player that Howe singled out by name before the game. Made it clear that Shevley would be important to our success. And he responded.

Hope the Jedi mind tricks can work long term.

Did the same with Joelinton too, and he was also very good against Brentford.

It doesn't excuse his shite performances over the last few years but he can be an asset when players are passing and moving around him and creating space rather than just standing still and we saw that yesterday for the first time in a long time

Best performance for a long time with him but it's still a liability having him and Willock in CM.  Brentford went through us with ease at times.

Ideally we’d get rid of Shelvey from the team, find a competent anchor man type defensive midfielder who is mobile and can pass the ball quickly to free up a Willock and especially ASM while also giving the defence a certain level of protection. Which we have none of in midfield and asking Shlevey to be that and also be creative, well he’s a liability in general in both senses, great for the odd Hollywood ball though…

We're so desperate for a central midfielder it's unreal.

What Howe said was absolutely right, Shelvey is technically a very good footballer. We knew this already. The bleep tests mean there's nowhere to hide for any player, they will have to get to a certain fitness level or they will be out of the team. With Jonjo we've been here before, he's talked about a strict new fitness regime with Rafa, and just recently with Bruce where he said he was going to start cutting out the after match drinking.

Who knows though. Maybe playing a more attacking brand of football will inspire him to keep it going this time.

I had a feeling he'd look better this weekend based on us getting men forwards and having more to aim for and more movement around him.

Pleasingly he seemed to put a shift in, I just think we maybe could have done with Hayden rather than Willock to do a little more dirty work.

Still can't stand the moody workshy cunt but Saturday was the first green shoot we've seen from him in about four year.

Played a bit further forward, he seemed to have on average 4-5 players to pass forward to, as opposed to 1-2 and it was noticeable how much more effort he put in.  It may well change under Howe's system.  But currently, he seems to be the only midfielder at the club capable of passing the ball forward, whether that is long or short.  He played really well.

One thing I did notice, despite the improved work rate.  Was that he would still regularly go in to press, when he was clearly not going to get there, due to how immobile he is.  Then he would just get easily passed or dribbled round, whilst he is stood still and is completely taken out of the game.

He has never been mobile and it seems like there have always been attitude problems throughout his career.  But maybe with the right coach and fitness regime.  He might manage to improve the defensive side of his game.  As whilst it made a refreshing change seeing him sprint.  It was still ineffective a lot of the time.

Saturday was the best he's played since Man United (h) in February 2018, when we won 1-0. That day he assisted the goal and worked tirelessly off the ball, closing players down, winning the ball back. The weekend was reminiscent of that, but he simply has to keep that up. When he's like that he's superb.

I really want to like him, the way he plays the game is brilliant at times. Even his composure to take little touches under pressure and relieve his teammates a bit is class.

Rafa binned him pretty much instantly, either he wouldn't get onboard with what Rafa wanted or Rafa just believed he was beyond help.

Massive open question whether he can maintain this kind of form, and also with who we put beside him.

When was Bournemouth away, where he had the freedom of the whole town?  He ran the show that day and we won 4-1 or 4-0 from memory.  Should have been a lot more.

Was after the restart. I remember Maxi getting 3 assists that day, don't remember Shelvey being great at all.

He made a bad decision for their third goal. Not sure why he ran over to to try double up on a player and just left Onyeka and gave him a free shot. Murphy was about to win the ball back

That aside he looked okay on highlights

I think there was such a desire to press as instructed that we then went steaming in to win the ball back a bit carelessly at times and the ball ran through for them to capitalise. Happened on both their first goal and their last one.

Good to see the effort from the team, but just needed to be a bit more under control when going for the ball. Think we'll get better at that as they continue to work on the new approach.
