They can afford to do that even if the signing doesn’t work out. Man City won’t have just decided in the last couple of months that they wanted to try and get Semenyo. He’s been hot PL property and they’ll have been tracking him the same as we were. And speaking to his agent to tell him they’re interested. We’d have been pissing in the wind by making an approach. Guehi, Semenyo etc are some of the most sought after players in the league. Every club in the league knows all about them and the ones that represent a step up from Palace or Bournemouth will be watching them closely. Biggest chance we have is if none of the cartel clubs fancy them because they have good enough players for those positions already or priorities to buy into other positions etc As soon as one of those clubs is in then more often than not we’re fucked. They can risk the transfer fees and they can smash us on wages and they’ve all got trophy cabinets dripping in silver. Now and again we’ll get lucky and a player like that will buy into our project. But it’ll be a rarity for now. Hence all the alleged failures over the summer. We’re game fishing with the big boys but they’ve got chum and we’ve got maggots.
