Teams that can’t finish above us (2023/24)

Fucking hell lads, what a crazy ride it's been this season.

No matter what happens now Eddie will always be a hero for what he accomplished this season.

Also Kieran fucking Trippier for coming in and bagging us nine points on his own, God damn.

Finally, spare a thought for old Jonjo whose farcical free kick against Leeds gave us that crucial win going into deadline day and made it look like survival might actually be possible. Not sure the Bruno signing happens without that one.

Oh and Bruno coming in and scoring more goals for us in a few weeks than he has in his life, including his first ever header. What the fuck man. What was this season??

The best prickish thing he did here. [emoji38]

Remember Anal describing it as an ‘obscene gesture’ in Monday’s Chronicle or similar.

I don't know of/remember this, what happened? 🤔

It was 2003 and we got knocked out of the 3rd round of the fa Cup away to, then, championship side wolves 3 - 2. Bellamy was getting stick off the wolves fans & reacted by pointing to the Premier league badge.

"We're in the Premiership" he mouthed, walking directly towards a camera.

Whilst I largely agree that in a tangible sense the January spend is a superficial take; the mental impact of fresh faces coming in that includes influential, internationally accomplished and up and coming players will certainly have had a substantial-if-indirect influence on things.

It's quite clear that Trippier's influence extended far outside of the 90 minutes of the matchday, and I would expect that Joel, Shelvey and Willock would have tried to raise their game knowing that Bruno was waiting to take one of their spots.

Our January spending is a stupid argument anyway. We spent near £90m to try and keep ourselves in the Premier League, this is the same league where two clubs spent more than that on just one player each this season. If we didn't spend and went down would we be allowed to spend £90m to try and get promoted again? And how much then again to build a squad that could stay up?

Its complete nonsense hammering a club for spending what is a modest sum of money these days in football to simply try and keep themselves in the top flight. Its just another stick to beat us with. Go ask Leeds and Burnley fans if they'd have spent £90m a few months ago to be in our position.

I agree with a fair bit of that. It wasn't just the fresh faces but those that came in had a mentality that others bought in to. Shelvey, Willock etc didn't raise their game due to a replacement waiting in the wings, they improved because of a change of mentality at the club and much of that was down to the players brought in.

Remember back to when Shelvey first arrived, a similar flurry of incoming, good players but the mentality at the club remained........we went down.

It's money we should have spent in the summer but couldn't - Villa spent the same as we have (£93m in the summer and £27m in the winter; we spent £93m in the winter and £25m in the summer) and they are 1 point ahead of us.

Obviously £25m in the summer is the total fee for Willock, none of these transfers are all up-front... remember Villa are 1 point ahead despite us being winless in our first 14.

Teams spent that in the summer to improve their team/squad. We didn’t.

January wasn’t us getting a leg up, it was us catching up to all the other teams.

And not just from that Summer but numerous windows before that.
