Mike Ashley (former owner) (still alive)

Recommended Posts

Funnily enough I was talking to someone close to Ashley recently, asked him about Wednesday as a friend of mine is a fan and he was adamant there is no interest there. Basically wants a football-club-sized Sports Direct advert and outside of the PL that just isn't worth it.

Guess we'll find out soon enough!

The Sheffield clubs always seem continuously let down by the owners. Both given the size of their fan bases should be mainstays in the Premier League.

As much as I quite like both clubs and there are smaller clubs than both that are currently mainstays I wouldn't say either Sheffield clubs fanbase warrants mainstay status either, better than they've had in recent history but not mainstays. They've averaged 30,000 three or four times between them since the 60s. Less than Boro combined.

Suggests they should really combine and make it a one club city.

Id hate to see him take over another club but if he did take over Sheffield Wednesday and pushed to promote them to the PL ( :yao:), fuck we'd take some pleasure in smashing them.

In spite of a good few of their fans’ really weird, borderline nonce behaviour over the commotion in the away end in that cup tie a couple years back it’d be a shame if that cunt gets his mitts on a club like Sheff Wed. What’s happened to them has been a right shame.

Sheffield United owners have asked the EFL if they would sanction a merger of the two clubs.

The choice between merging with your rivals, or having Ashley as an owner.

This is a legit question from them?

Apparently the plan is to take part of the name of each club to create the name of the new hybrid club.

They're going to take the 'Sheffield' from Sheffield Wednesday and the 'United' from Sheffield United which seems totally fair

They’re a grand old club, but - unpopular opinion coming - I don’t think Ashley would be a disastrous fit, given what the last quarter of a century has been like for them.  There’s no way Ashley buys the club to potter around the lower leagues - he knows the money is in the PL.  So you buy a club as a big as Sheff Wed for a bargain £20m, and maybe you spend £100m to get them up - they’re instantly worth double that in the top flight.  And if you’re a Sheff Wed supporter, you’re back in the top flight.

Of course, Ashley is venal and incompetent, so it could all go wrong - but it’s been going badly wrong there for a long time.  Sheff Wed are still a bigger club in my mind than half the PL teams.

Someone has to be bamming up SSN! As out of touch as football owners are there's no way even the most tone deaf of them would attempt something like that.

Cant see it working out for either party.

Ashley has never tried to run a club to achieve some kind of success - only to make money out of it and that's going to require improvements across the board he has no record of making or wanting to make. He makes his money by having clubs scrimp, they've got nowt to scrimp on and a historically very fickle fanbase he cant bank on showing up and funding it, let alone any record of being able to maintain top flight football to get it that way.

A bit harsh on their support I reckon :) their average has only dipped a little below 20k twice this century despite not being in the top flight, and they were a top flight mainstay for most of their history prior to 2000.  I’m not sure our average would be much better than theirs if we’d had the same spell they have.
