54
Think this is worthy of its own thread at this point. 14000 new cases yesterday, with 242 deaths
BlueStar
Now renamed Covid-19, which might stop people confusing it with flu. MWC has just been cancelled. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-51474116
loki679
The surge in new cases was due to them changing the way they're classifying it. Previously they would only confirm a case after lab tests, now they're confirming clinical diagnoses.
Shadow Puppets
Without meaning to sound simplistic, isn't the sudden surge in reported new cases actually in a way, a good thing? It means that the death percentage rate is a bit lower? Not to mention probably thousands and thousands of people with very mild symptoms that never get diagnosed. Jimburst
It will almost certainly get worse than it is currently. 'Health Bosses' said yesterday they expected it to continue until summer...
Guest neesy111
Yes it will get worse, but saying it'll take a hold is absolutely ridiculous.

Papavasiliou
At what point would airlines stop flights to China? Thinking completely selfishly, I've got flights booked in April with stopovers in Beijing and Chengdu and I'm getting increasingly paranoid that they're gonna get cancelled at the last minute. Not that arsed about the virus itself as I'll not be leaving the airports and I'm sure anyone going near there with a slightly elevated temperature will be bundled into a box and driven away well before they get near me. B-more Mag
Is this one of those things that's dangerous primarily due to the public heath consequences--massive contagion rates, overburdened health systems, etc.--as opposed to any particularly crazy danger at the isolated, individual level (putting aside adequate access to healthcare, etc.)? Maybe a bit of both? But we're not talking like Ebola-type likelihood of death at the individual level, right? (Not that it really matters, I guess--people are dying, and that's bad). The mortality rate in Hubei has so far been higher than everywhere else but that's the epicentre and their health system has been absolutely slammed. Coping with an influx of thousands of pneumonia patients would stress any local health system in the world. Down here in Guangdong we've had about 1200 cases and only 2 deaths so far (in a province of 120 million people). Strangely enough that cruise ship that's stuck in Japan might turn out to be a fair indicator as it's a closed system and a high number of infections although the people on board do skew towards the older age range. They've had some good results with some antiviral drugs from what i've read and trials are ongoing so hopefully they can get it smothered before it spreads much further. Consortium of one
Thought I read somewhere last week that the South Koreans had developed an inoculation. Not sure how long it takes to test, mass produce and deliver.
