Here is one in your backyard about a dude who decided to take it upon himself to clean the beaches of the Isle of Man, and in as a result created a conservationist organization with 15,000 volunteers.

Beyond Borders travels to the Isle of Man - a small British Crown dependency in the middle of the Irish Sea - to meet with Bill Dale, founder of Beach Buddies, a beach cleaning organization that has transformed the island into a shining example of conservation and sustainability.

The idea of Beach Buddies was born in 2006 while Bill was walking his dogs on the beach at Kirkmichael. Disheartened by the piles of plastic trash surrounding him, Bill decided to act. Until then, no one had any idea of the scale of the problem facing the Isle of Man. Within a few weeks he and one other person had collected hundreds of bags of rubbish, some of the materials dating back as far as 30 years. It was then clear that the Isle of Man had a massive problem with rubbish on its beautiful beaches.

And so a decision was made...

Now, 14 years on, Beach Buddies has over 15,000 volunteers, and has established a presence in a number of countries. Bill has been asked to speak about its achievements at Universities across the world. Invitations have come from Ohio, California, New York, Washington, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia and across the United Kingdom.

Remember, it's not enough just to stand and stare.
