Michael Cox has been saying for years that he thinks cynical challenges with no attempt for the ball should be reds, no matter where they are on the field.

Thought this for a while too. Hate fouls where the player is breaking and they get clipped from behind, no intention of winning the ball. I reckon they should be straight reds.

Proud of Southgate and the boys, but that was a total bottle job after going 1-0 up, devastated. Oh well…

Great tournament, great bunch of lads, have to give Southgate huge credit for getting us to the final and it was so close even though we essentially gave them free rein on the pitch for over 60 minutes. They’re a good side and were always going to dominate sections but the way we set up in the second half without making any changes cost us the game. Then when Chiesa went off Southgate had a chance to go all out for the win in extra time but settled for penalties with his late subs. Still, delighted with our progress, just hope some of these racist cunts on Twitter get done, lose their jobs and take a flare up the arse

Special mention to Pickford for me as well, on the night deserved much more.  I was worried about him coming in as he'd lost his mind in the couple of games beforehand for short periods and I thought he was due a howler but fair play to the mackem cunt.

So when Rice tried to stop Chiesa first half after he went past him, first by pulling and then kicking, straight red?

Yeah that was naughty and very dirty and as usual was totally glossed over by the English commentators.  If he made contact with Chiesa I think there would have been an argument for a red as it would likely have been studs raked down the back of his leg.

Said to my mates at the time that was a big moment as he was their only real threat, I think you're right a manager with a killer instinct goes for it at that point.

Looking at the wider picture, no doubt we'll see a lot of racist and violent dickheads about, but this squad and manager have attracted a much more diverse support than in the past. It's a step towards gentrification, but much rather that than the England national team remaining a host for backwards parasites. I want the WC squad to be woke as fuck and full of gays and socialists.

Think the positive feelgood factor has been massively helped by the fact most of our games were here so we've seen no scenes of scumbags rioting in other countries and such for once.  Easy to forget just how negative that whole thing is imo.  Russia was probably the same for that of course, for obvious reasons and we'll probably get away with it in Qatar as well.

Can’t help but feel that Southgate messed up. You can’t defend an early lead against better teams and do so for 90 minutes. At some point they work out a way and you start giving chances and if one is taken it is incredibly difficult to get yourself on the front foot.

Southgate was reactionary instead of grabbing the moment and giving his side the opportunity to carry a threat.

I’ll not even start on Southgate putting Rashford and Sancho on in the 30th minute of ET and expecting 2 young lads to score the penalties to win the Euros. Ffs Gareth you know the pressure, you know what it is to miss and you weren’t brought on with the single expectation to score.

Why isn't there some sort of public announcement before events like this? "If you are racist towards any of our players after the match, you will be thrown into a meat grinder feet first and never seen again" sort of message.

@samptime29 Nice of your boss, gotta say!

Sadly that was the result of a good manager vs an average to poor one. I’ve defended Southgate a lot this tournament and admit he’s done well to get us to the final, but his tactical limitations were there for all to see.

His in game management is atrocious and it cost us again.

Sadly the overall performance in the tournament will keep him in a job/even earn him praise.

On a side note, football once again bringing out the utter morons. Idiots attempting to break into Wembley followed by other idiots positing racist comments. Thick as pig shit, stop associating yourselves with football because you’re not part of it.

I must admit to not really rating Maguire before, but what a tournament then stepping up to take #2. Would hope to see him as captain shortly.

Yeah, I agree. He did well trying to bring the ball out of defence as well.

Southgate showed that he is basically Steve Bruce with a nice personality. If the F.A had balls they would peddle him now as he has peaked in the job and it's all downhill from here. Not going to happen of course.

More gutted about this this morning than I was last night [emoji38]

The more I think about it, the more Foden being out was a big problem for us - I think he'd have caused real problems had he come on after 60 minutes. Once Kane was marked out of the game, we didn't have anyone savvy enough to pick up pockets of space and create attacking momentum in the central areas of the pitch. I've been disappointed by Mount this tournament because he's shown for Chelsea that he can make big moments happen, but he was meek in a lot of games and struggled to find purpose in the team - probably wasn't helped that we tried to make him into some sort of wide playmaker yesterday.

Where does the side go from here? I do think they might've outgrown Southgate, tbh, but there could be enough talent to get past that at the World Cup. I really hope Bellingham continues his rise because we definitely lacked in central midfield all tournament and need a General in there. Rice actually played really well last night but I don't think he's the man to consistently deliver that type of performance - he feels a bit like Tiote to me in that he might suit really specific games well but then then be ineffectual in others.

Ultimately, I think we were undone by a lack of confidence more than anything. The Italians were fantastic at building their way back into the game and you could just tell they had belief in what they were doing from half-time onwards. And what a lovely player Insigne is too; some outrageous technique on display.
