Heartbreaking words, @LFEE. Have absolutely no doubt at all that your dad will be immensely proud of you and your efforts. Don't rule out the impact of AO either, it may well have accelerated his departure, if only by months.

Similar. The last thing I promised to my dad was I’d get rid of Ashley for him. There were times in the campaign I thought we came close to achieving it. As time went on my dad finally succumb and packed in his ST after many decades of support. Ashley had ground him down. The man who would never leave until after the final whistle no matter the score still in hope we could snatch a point from a score line of impossibility some games. That was my dad. He always had hope but that was slowly taken away from him bit by bit and that is the biggest crime that has taken place in my eyes.

I’ll always remember @Greg and I struggling to adorn the AshleyOut mobile before we set off to Leicester via Sports Direct HQ. We’d used my parents drive as it was a quiet discrete spot to attach all the banners. After initially trying to leave us to it he couldn’t help himself in his mid 70’s getting involved and climbing up the side of the van to help attach everything safely. You could see the hurt in his eyes of what supporting the club had become but also the pride in his son and friend along with many others on here trying to force some kind of change.

A few years later we returned to the EPL with Rafa and I hoped to entice my dad back for a game after years away. It was the Forest Cup game and tickets were purchased as he reluctantly agreed to go as he claimed nothing was going to change long term under Ashley. Unfortunately for me on the day he felt a little under the weather and he instructed me to give up his ticket. Come the end of extra time and penalties I returned home late only to receive a call from my Mam in a panic saying my dad wasn’t right. I dashed round. He wasn’t. I tried to resuscitate him but it was clear he was already dead and the noises my Mam had heard whilst he lay in bed earlier before ringing me was a fatal heart attack.

That’s why it was the biggest crime in my eyes. As it would’ve usually took a lot more than a temperature to put him off a match. Even an early round League Cup Game he’d of always of wanted to go but that was taken from him as he was sadly from me about a decade too early in each case. I always wonder the timings and if he’d had the heart attack during the tail end of the game might he of survived with all the medical help and myself on hand to help rather than stuck at home with my Mam who struggled to fathom how to use the phone to ring me.

So I’d failed in my promise to get rid of Ashley which always hurts but let’s hope for us all in here and the thousands and thousands of others that hopefully today or any day soon now, we are ALL rid of Ashley even if it is of his own accord.

As for that trip to Leicester I proudly held aloft a banner saying “We don’t demand a team that wins, we demand a club that tries!” and that’s all my dad ever wanted too along with us all on here I think. That banner still sits in my outhouse collecting dust. Let’s ALL hope it never needs to be dusted down again.

So hopefully this is the last time I’ll need to type or mutter these words… Ashley Out!

Thank you for sharing this story I hope he’s up there somewhere doing cartwheels right now

Man, that post LFEE.

People like you who did so much work the last few years are heroes and better than a lot of the fanbase deserves.

Thanks so much for all you did, sounds like your father was rightly proud.

I started Supporting Newcastle around 1970. Went to my first game in December 1980, (1-0 v sheff wed, bobby bentnose shinton scored). Went to just about every game over the next 20 years. I stopped going when Robson was sacked. Most of the lads i used to travel the country with have also stopped going. I dont even watch football on tv anymore. I do spend far too much time reading thus forum though.
this day is fantastic, I am elated, i want to start going back to the match. For those that haven’t experienced what this city is like when the football is good are in for a treat. You had to be there as an adult when Keegan was here in the 90s.

thing is, Ive got covid, and am not well at all. Hope I dont snuff it lol

This news will destroy your covid mate.

Get well soon.

Well that's me crying. Beautiful words @LFEE. Thanks for everything you guys did 👍

My son was born 3 months after Ashley bought the club and the drudgery under Ashley is all he's ever known. I had a ST with him for the Rafa promotion and the first season back but walked away when he didn't back him in the second. I explained the situation to my my son who was gutted but even at 12 years of age, he said he understood.

I promised him we'd be back in the ground the day Ashley left the club, and managed to get us some Spurs tickets last night. Can't wait, even if we do get battered.

I still have issues with the Saudis as owners and not sure I'll be back myself.....but delighted for my son and his generation to hopefully witness (and more) the excitement of the Keegan years.

Hats off to all who protested against Ashley, including the many good folk I met off here through that. You know who you are.

Great post BTW LFEE.

@LFEE. Amazing post mate, football and NUFC means so much to so many and to have had that bond ripped apart by Ashley is heartbreaking.

I'm sure he's looking down on you today and smiling.

I think the thing I am looking forward to most... it's not big money signings, new managers or new training grounds. It's the years of optimism ahead of us that I can share with my kids. They have been to two friendlies... they loved the experience, but I never wanted to take them to a competitive game. It just wasn't competitive or enjoyable.

Now, my 6 year old and 4 year old can share in their Dad's passion and feel proud that we will actually be trying to become bigger and better. That's all I want. A club that tries to improve year on year, and to share that passion and experience with my family.

God damn Paul, that's a similarly beautiful and sad post. You, @Greg and so many others can hold your head up high that while you couldn't stop Ashley desecrating the club you love so much, you fought back as hard as you could and I like to think that it is this fight that finally made the club more hassle than it was worth for Ashley and convinced him to finally sell up for real. We have all pretty much lost 14 years of enjoyable football fan life, where everything has just felt incredibly numb. Some of our friends and family are not here anymore to see the day when hopefully the good times can return. I can't wait to set foot in Saint James' again and feel the club is back in harmony with its fans and your beautiful city!
