Those goals take me back to U11 football. Not having a go but you can’t be scoring goals like that. It was mentioned in a thread earlier that the lasses can have all the skills and coaching but being able to score from 35 yards with a weak looping shot because the keeper can’t reach the bar is pretty ridiculous.

It does still seem to me. Like the difference in ability with outfield players in the women’s game, compared to the men’s game. Is nowhere near as noticeable as the keepers. 
 

Every time I see a long range goal. It often tends to be a howler from the keeper. 
 

Is it a lack of specialised coaching and resources? Or is it more to do with physical limitations and the height of the keepers?

Said this for ages. Women keepers are, generally rank, occasionally beyond rank. 

The only decent one I've ever seen was Hope Solo and I've never seen her play 😉

 

Seriously tho, I'm not sure why the people that run woman's football in the UK haven't done what the Ploympic rowing/cycling teams have done, for over a decade, and targeted young girls with attributes that fit the sport/position and train them up.

Dunno how critical you can be of the goalie really; literally just looks like a case of her not being tall enough. Japan's goalie did a worse cock-up earlier today tbh. Both great strikes as well; deliberate, powerful, accurate. 

 

There doesn't seem to be that much debate regarding the goals sizes and the Women's game is already at a point where it gets major exposure and interest, so I assume nothing's changing. I presume WSL-standard keepers are generally taller?

There just hasn't been any investment in women's football at all until the last few years, and the investment there has been, has only been at the top level!

 

The keeper playing today will almost certainly never have had actual proper goal keeping training. If she has, it will be a recent thing compared to boys, who will have it from a very early age!

 

In the WSL (top women's league in this country) up until a few years ago, most teams didn't even have a goal keeper coach!

 

The standard at international level has improved hugely over the last few years, but it will be a long time before tier 4 teams have good quality keepers!

 

Great occasion today though! Just hope we can get promotion his season and we can start to invest properly

Was up there watching it today and enjoyed it. Not sure that having those large flags in the crowd is a good idea mind with very young kids using them. There were numerous occasions around me when people were nearly getting their eyes taken out by them. Those things are lethal in the wrong hands.

 

The game itself was a good watch, particularly in the 1st half when we were pretty much camped in their half. From what I saw, the team holds possession really well and plays some nice stuff but lacks any kind of threat in the final 3rd. Hence the two goals coming from long range.

 

A special word for Charlotte Potts, who was immense at the back. She looks a superb player and was Botman-like out there.

Was there also. Great for the local area seeing so many there. Felt very proud. Although I agree the danger element was there with the flags the kids joking aside loved them with some more content on waving them than watching the match so they helped entertain one way or another.

 

First time I’ve seen NUW and was a little disappointed with the standard but we are what we are. Certainly no lack of effort. Not sure of any of the names but one if not both our CH’s looked the best players in the team.

 

Nothing to add on the GK debate other than I got to sing a quick rendition of “are you Pickford in disguise…” when we took the lead 🙂

Regardless of where these particular girls end up they'll remember these years for ever. 

Obvs I didn't go but I've been stirred enough to look into the pyramid system to see where and how they progress.

You're not going to have smaller goals in women's football. They use the same pitches and facilities as the men across the globe, immediately before or after men's or junior football. In most cases you can't swap the goals around at a whim on the local park. It's just not a feasible thing to implement if you want to retain and actually increase accessibility to the game/facilities for women's footy.

 

I don't think it's a major issue at the top level of the women's game anymore anyway. Female players can't shoot as powerfully as the men - and I think that balances things out. If you did reduce size of goals you'd likely reduce the number of goals scored significantly.

For what it’s worth, I think I read that we’re applying to be moved up the pyramid with immediate effect next season.

For me it was more to do with the goalkeeper's positioning and footwork on both rather than the size of the goals.

 

Just some general observations I had yesterday:

 

1) Poor goalkeeper's - both sides really lacked a good keeper, and this was largely down to positioning and footwork.

 

2) Poor decision making - The wrong decisions were made a number of times especially when in dangerous positions

 

3) Lack of heading - They all seemed to duck out of headers unless absolutely necessary

 

4) Our number 3(?) at CB was a cut above, had coordination, technique and a great understanding of the game

 

5) Lack of Aggression - There wasn't the same intensity to the play as with the men, perhaps because the size of the occasion, I'm not sure, but it was noticeable second half when Newcastle upped the ante they seemingly, quite easily got on top

 

6) Excellent turnout with a lot of women and kids, this should really be a case of, if games can be played at SJP, even during a week, more often then it'd massively benefit them and the community to get involved

 

Appreciate there's a lot of negative feedback amidst the above and in summary the standard was very poor compared to men's PL and especially our football at present. However, it's to be expected really. It's a game we've spent 130 years playing and the lasses haven't had anywhere near that time or investment in them. I'm almost certain that their growth in the next 3 years will be outstanding and the growth in the women's game as a whole will also continue significantly especially after such inspirational wins as the women's Euros.

If women hadn't been effectively been banned for decades things might be better than they are now. They could kick a ball about but weren't allowed to use official training facilities or anything like that that would help them as it was unseemly for a woman to play football.
