Newcastle United 3 - 3 Brentford (20/11/2021)

Midfield protection for the back 3 CH was laughable at times looking at the highlights.

We have poor full backs, substandard midfielders and only 1 or 2 competeent CH...not a recipe for any sort of success (by whatever standards you measure success against)

Willock looks a shell of his former form (fitness or confidence?) The movement in midfield at times looked geriatric, offering no options for forward momentum when playing out from the back.

The positional sense of the players playing in the full back roles was awful: we need proper full backs not make shift wingers/wing backs.

Eddie has a lot to sort out and sort out fast looking at yesterdays 'better' performance.

If he keeps this team up even with some help in the January transfer window with new and better arrivals, he will have performed a small miracle.

I agree but the rot is slowly being eradicated.

Im not concerned with the league position at this point, Im more concerned about setting the foundations and the start of the rebuilding.   NUFC has been neglected for so long.   Yesterday we turned 20-30% possession football and 0-1 shots at goal into 52% possession, 29 shots at goal and 9 on target, and restricted the opposition to 4 shots on target. In terms of enjoyment from a match, yesterday was at another level, the crowd were engaged.

Hopefully we have enough time to escape relegation but if we dont, Id rather go down with games like yesterday than Bruce ball where the only thing you had to look forward to was going for a piss so you could escape the shite being served up!

What did you make of it, Wullie? Can remember asking you a while back whether or not you would be able to turn the tap back on, so to speak, when the takeover finally happened. Any sense of getting 'the feelings' back yet? (no expectation, just genuinely curious!)

Fwiw I thought Brentford were just as sloppy as we were and although like us, they will be a threat going forward, or rather they will get in among the goals enough, they looked even dodgier than us at the back. 2 points dropped, however, IMO. If we want to stay up, we have to be beating these at home.

Replace Ritchie with Almiron if we go 3 at the back. Ritchie when they scored their 2nd was absolutely abysmal. Brentford player didn't even move quickly inside and Ritchie still wasn't able to cut him off/press him to a degree so that the player couldn't cross it to the. Far post.

Sometimes when the opposition has 1-2 players attacking our central penalty are or the 1st post we are like bees on honey and have all our defenders trying to defend that one area, leaving another opposition player free at the back post. Time and time again ffs. Too mcu ball watching.

Ritchie has been targeted by opposition all season and it’s worked big time. So many goals coming from his side. He should be nowhere near the team.

Still don't see the advantage to three at the back. Half of the time one or both is just marking fresh air and even with 3 we still let their forward win the ball by dropping off easily. I'd rather play Manq and Lewis in a 4 and then have Almiron at 10 as we're always missing a link between midfield and attack.

Should not need to score 4 at home to win a game.

Felt like every single time they attacked it was going to be a goal.

You can have all the numbers back that you want but if you're not organised you will leak goals.

All 3 were shambolic.

Our wingbacks seem to be what costs us the most goals.

Not during the Rafa era.

He had the same set of players aswell apart from Lejeune.

That is the worst part of the horrific Bruce era. He has taken a well drilled organised defensive unit and turned them into this.

What worries me is I don't know if Howe is the one to organise it and fix it and if he is, does he have enough time?

Aye lets play defensively when out weakest part of the team is defense!     Is that you Bruce?

Defending isn't just the responsibility of the defenders. 50% of the midfield's job is to defend, and we haven't got the balance right in that area. We don't have a specialist DM who can correct that imbalance. I see Hayden more as an average box-to-box player who is making the best of the anchor role, and Hendrick doesn't want the responsibility.

In fairness to Bruce, he did try to bring in a DM and was blocked. In fairness to myself, I knew at the time that we were then in big trouble and so it has proved.

As I said, it's a moot point whether it's best to batten down the hatches or go for it. But the general wisdom in football is that a team that tries to compensate for a weak defence by outscoring the opposition ends up in trouble.

Aye, because Bruce's priority was to reward the fella that saved his job.

A Brazilian national team manager once said that managing a football team was like being in a bed with a blanket that is too small. If you hitch the blanket up to your shoulders, your feet get cold, and if you cover your feet, your shoulders are exposed.

That's the position we're in, and have been in all season. If we pick an attacking line up, the defence gets exposed, if we play defensively, we can't score. To some extent, every team faces some sort of dilemma like that, but in our case it's quite extreme.

Until we strengthen the squad, I think our better bet is to play defensively, but there's not a lot in it.

You win football matches by getting more goals than the opposition.

You get more goals than the opposition by consistently creating more chances than them.

I know not all chances are equal but assuming they are for a moment, if they're having 10 chances and we have 2, we're not going to consistently win.

You need to create more than the opposition. Once you factor in XG you need to have yours greater than the opponent's long-term to get success. I don't believe you can do this by playing defensively.

That's not to say we should be streaming forward like absolute lunatics at every opportunity, but shutting up shop like we did under Jones is just delayed suicide. We MUST carry a threat. Yesterday we created way more than Brentford. Play that game 100 times and we win way more than we lose or draw. I say we carry on that way rather than how Jones set us up, because that way we lose more than we win or draw.

We need a midfield capable and mobile enough to offer both an offensive outlet and threat, and able to protect our centre halves and woefully weak full backs, and act as a defensive barrier.

Agree with you entirely with regards to attacking intent, coupled with a solid defensive ability in built into the team, starting in the midfield areas.

We need to buy that in my opinion, as I don't see it in any of the players we currently have.  Unless Howe is simply a genius.

All of our CBs are hopeless mind.  Though we need Schar there to bring the ball out if you play a back 3 but defensively as lascelles and Clark are hopeless on it.

Should've been far more than 4 mins stoppage time.

First 5 mins of the 2nd half was stop start with 2 injuries, then 6 subs and 2 goals and time wasting by them.

Great having people at the club who are well spoken and don't just wheel out tired clichés at every opportunity.

Aye, they all come across so well, they seem calm, calculated and hard working. Just a shame we sit bottom and Ashley and Bruce have hamstrung the club so much recently, again.
