The paragons of football virtue have now only spent €300m before August despite their famously low ceiling. We're truly blessed to have the honour of sharing a league with them.

May have been the moment lost last bit of respect for Klopp. Pleading poverty a) wildly inaccurate and b) totally unnecessary. Just seemed like to inflate his own achievements which is also unnecessary, no one doubted his talents as a coach ffs.

This must make Ekitike one of the most expensive players on the planet then? Which is just fucking mental.

edit - 12th according to Wiki. Jesus Christ, glad we walked.

Hopefully some lessons learned by the fans at least. Looks like the club will keep doing stupid shit over and over. 3 times we've been used by this cunt and his team, and it's probably not the last either.

Honestly starting to think I could make better business and footballing decisions than this lot. That's worrying, that's back to incompetent owners feeling.

We made enormous offers for Pedro and Ekitike. The only one you can make that argument for is Trafford but we had some leverage there because the player wanted to come. He's also only proven at Championship level.

Clearly there's going to come a point where we have to just buy worse players like Cf says, but the point I was making at the beginning is that the cartel control the market and it's a dire constraint for us and anyone else with serious ambition. Whether you think we've lowballed Burnley or not (we clearly haven't imo).

Feel like that's such an excuse.

There's value out there, we can't forget the rest of the clubs in the league and the business they do, and it turns out to be brilliant business at times, Bournemouth, Forest, Brighton, you can include ourselves in that bracket, previously we took a more risky approach with Hall,Livramento.

The Ekitike thing is purely driven by agents he could have been had on the cheap and low wages, just like your Kerkez, Huijsen, Murillo, MGW, Zabarnyi, Van Hecke etc,

You'll see again with De Cuyper this season how Brighton do it,

We can get value, we need to go and find it, I personally don't think it's as difficult if you use risk reward, but it will be extremely difficult if we are stubborn on the targets thinking they're the ones, time runs out and you get burned.

It's been explained a hundred times before why we don't have the same transfer shortlist as mid-table clubs with mid-table aspirations. We're dining at the top table but the cartel clubs are the only ones with access to the tasting menu.

Yeah, that's too much money

Hopefully he'll find leading the line too hard like Darwin and end up developing like another Gakpo - not develop at all. fuck off liverpool

I was scratching my head at £70m, frankly.  It’s an insane fee.

Isn't that what we supposedly offered?  So it's the add ons which take it to £80 mil +? Sky saying Liverpool is his 'preferred' destination - as opposed to 'only Liverpool'.  I think that's a fairer reflection.

@Yorkie

Total bollox, you're over egging it.

Even the big boys look for value in the market, if a top target becomes available to a big club obviously they're in, but dining at the top table is nonsense.

We weren't miles apart from the clubs mentioned, we are closely contested by them most seasons, and we're in a bracket of clubs still fighting to be in and around top 7, without that fith place CL spot our season would be totally different.

You know this, you're still clutching for some reason ?

There's value in the market,we need to utilise it, not going to go on too much because there's another month of this, and I feel we will find it.

But I'm seeing a lot of excuses, the cartel narrative is getting old already.

It is - he seemed overvalued with our bid tbh.  If what Liverpool have bid well in excess of that, they’ve had their pants down.  I remain unconvinced by the lad.

It is too much tbf as he's totally unproven - Pedro would have been better value at £60mil

Cartel clubs can afford to just horde the best talent, partly because, unlike us, it won't absolutely screw them if one of these big money signings tanks.

FWIW I'm glad we missed out on Ekitike, for a few reasons. I'm less glad about the likelihood we'll quickly pivot to and move for other targets.
