Why would football tickets be different?

The take that football tickets are being ‘excluded’ is a bit of a weird one, because as far as I can make out, legislation-wise, they’re on about making it illegal to resell above face value, but that’s already the case with football tickets, it just never really gets enforced to any degree (other than what individual clubs do).

So unless I’m missing something (which could be the case tbh), it’s more an issue about whether there’s actually going to be increased enforcement around what has effectively always been illegal?

Because football is so popular that clubs and the football authorities end up with massive political swing, and they use that swing to the benefit of themselves and not the fans.

This money just goes to the football websites though, mostly out of the country I would think. Not to clubs or anything, does it?

Touting helps keep demand high, it helps sell memberships, and helps keep ticket prices high, that’s without the likes of Chelsea’s owner who owns one of the touting websites.

Touts with bots hoovering up football tickets and then selling them for huge profit on resale sites keeps the Premier League competitive.

If they clamp down on touting, there’s a risk that clubs “will do a Pompey”.

Said Richard Masters of the Premier League.

Got the email before there. It's a step in the right direction I suppose. Ridiculous not having some sort of waiting list in place for those desperate for a ST. As things stand there'll probably only be a few hundred become available due to death/financial situations/moving away/getting fed up but it's a start.

It's a good way to gauge demand as well. As many of you know we've got season tickets at PSV Eindhoven. Their season ticket waiting list stands at 20,000 (they already have 28k ST holders from a 35,000 capacity) and they've just announced plans to increase capacity to up to 55,000 to cater for the demand.

It'll be interested to see how NUFC get this up and running and how they decide what order anyone goes to in the queue as I'd expect 30 or 40k to apply.

It’s good data for the club but I don’t see any benefit to a 40k waiting list for 100 tickets a season.

Unless they’re going to sell a large amount of STs for the new stadium I guess.

I met an OAP recently who’d just inherited his own season ticket from a OAP friend who’d passed away earlier this year.

Not hating on the fella I met as he was canny enough, but I was surprised to hear that he’d been able to get his own ST that way.

My dad is 74 now and is thinking about packing his in that he's had for about 40 years cos of all the late KO times. He asked last year about passing it down to me and was told that it's allowed.

Not sure how I feel about being able to keep ST’s amongst friends and family if someone gives one up. And by that I mean I genuinely can’t decide if I think it’s fair, or unfair.

It’s a ticket for a seat in a football ground for 19 games, but they’re becoming family heirlooms.

There’s a risk of it turning into something like the Marylebone Cricket Club.

I’d heard of people passing it on to ST’s to family members, usually as a result of a death, but it’s interesting that you can seemingly nominate someone to officially take over the ST at any point.

It’s crazy that you can just pass STs to family like. Shouldn’t be allowed in any way.

It's always been allowed, rightly or wrongly. Both parties just need to visit the ticket office with identification and complete the transfer.

I know, but why?

I don't know. As I say it's just always been a thing you can do. Obviously it's a bone of contention now as demand is through the roof when in the past it hasn't but certainly it's going to spilt opinion.

It's interesting because technically the season ticket remains the property of the club at all times. You rent it off them on a seasonal basis so for that reason alone I suppose you shouldn't be allowed to transfer it to someone else. Now in the past when there were more season tickets available than there was takers it was in the clubs interest to allow it but now demand very much outstrips supply they'd probably rather it was given up so they could sell it on a match by match basis.
